John E: I think one of the biggest problems for ukulele beginners is the lack of teachers. It’s hard to learn just from books and websites, without someone giving you the direct input you need. I’ve even considered setting up some sort of virtual ukulele teacher scheme on the net.

Hey there, signed up this morning and just thought I’d comment. Nice to see progressive uke. I’m a fortnight noobie who has had my heart stolen by ukes and just can’t stop tinkering. I’ve been a keyboard player and electronic music hobbyist for a couple of decades and this is the first instrument to have turned my head! I can’t wait to combine the two. Oh and a note to John E, check out http://www.chordie.com. Find the song you want then there is a pull-down on the right to change the tuning (for both C and D tuning). This option only works on the versions marked CHORDS in a blue box. Found some wonderfully obscure artists in there (Sunset Rubdown,Patrick Wolf, Broken Socail Scene to name a few I’ve grabbed) as well as mainstream and older stuff perfect for uke (The mighty Syd Barrett RIP)

I really enjoy getting your blog. I have been surfing the net and enjoying the various sites and info on playing the ukulele. I am doing some songs from bars and trying to build my knowledge of the fretboard and to get my fingers working right. My UAS has been somewhat eased by the plethura of information that you share. I have signed up to receive your new stuff. Thanks.

If you hunt around you can find a number of ukulele specific websites full of tabs – some of quite modern music to. I suggest a quick google and see what you find. Not as extensive as guitar, but pretty good.

I’m using using some of those “same old books” and DVD’s to learn from, It’s OK up to a point because of all the information and clips online – it’s so much easier when someone is demonstrating or explaining. The thing I’m most frustrated with is the lack of Uke songbooks featuring contemporary music that I want to play. Lyrics and chord boxes are fine if you are able to improvise the rest but as a beginner I’d really benefit from knowing what goes where on the time line.

Look forward to them. I’m hoping they can help me get over my ‘uke hump’. This is the situation where you can get through some chords, have some strum patterns down pat, but don’t know what to try and learn next so my playing is worth listening too! HELP!
