I think we've got the germ of a song there:

Damn, damn hipsters,
In their black hair-dye herds.
Preening and posing,
And crowding out the nerds.

We want to see the pretty singer,
We want to hear the rockin' uke.
Put down the absinthe, Artsy,
And put up your dukes.

We're a bunch of weakling geeks,
And we don't know how to fight.
But we mght lob some lugies,
And throw some elbows tonight.

Back when Chris Isaak was an up-and-coming young San Francisco rocker, his band did a long stand at a Haight Street club. All the hipsters would squeeze in -- but to see, be seen and to talk loudly. This great band was making great music in front of a packed house, but only a few people were paying attention. Arrrrgh!
To be fair, some coffeehouse/bar performances are really meant to be talked over. But if I'm within spitting distance of Priscilla Ahn, I'm gonna shut up and listen.

Ah, yes. There's no problem that can't be solved with a dollop of spit.

I think John Peel used to pay people who were talking to leave the gig.

I think she should have given those talking people the Roger Water's treatment.

"Ah, for fucks sakes... I'm trying to sing the song. I mean, I don't care if you don't want to hear it, you know. Fuck you. I'm sure there's a lot of people who do want to hear it."

And then, a good amount of spitting on talking people would have closed the deal.

I don't think there is anything more annoying than people who talk over live music. What the heck do they have to say that's so important, anyhow? Ukulele players are especially vulnerable to this crowd noise. There's a Jake show on the internet archive from Skipper's smokehouse and the crowd is silent through the entire gig. Of course, it was Grateful Dead night at the smokehouse, so that would explain the courteous behavior. :)

Thanks, Dan. It's a better video but there are people talking all through it. If it was at that gig, there'd be fists flying.
