I think John Peel used to pay people who were talking to leave the gig.

“Ah, for fucks sakes… I’m trying to sing the song. I mean, I don’t care if you don’t want to hear it, you know. Fuck you. I’m sure there’s a lot of people who do want to hear it.”

And then, a good amount of spitting on talking people would have closed the deal.

I don’t think there is anything more annoying than people who talk over live music. What the heck do they have to say that’s so important, anyhow? Ukulele players are especially vulnerable to this crowd noise. There’s a Jake show on the internet archive from Skipper’s smokehouse and the crowd is silent through the entire gig. Of course, it was Grateful Dead night at the smokehouse, so that would explain the courteous behavior. :)
