I pick up and put down my ukulele a lot and it can be a bit of a pain. They take up a fair bit of table space and can get scratched (quick hint: the experts recommend you put ukuleles face down on the table to prevent scratching) and putting it on the floor is definitely a bad idea if there's someone as clumsy as me around. But you can buy ukulele stands - or at least multi-purpose ukulele/violin/mandolin stands. They're a great way of keeping your safe and close at hand.
