  • The Weeknd – Blinding Lights (Tabs)

Here’s a tab for one of the catchiest songs of the last few years: The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights.

It’s not a song you’d immediately associate with the ukulele, but it works out pretty well. The big challenge is the speed. For my version, I slowed it down slightly from the original. But it’s still difficult at this speed. I think you could go slower and get away with it.

There are plenty of percussive elements in the arrangements. Lots of chnks, lots of muted notes and I’m plucking harder than usual and giving the strings a bit of snap.

  • Alanis Morissette – Hand in My Pocket (Tabs)

The intro and verses are very straightforward. It’s one chord all the way through and you don’t have to move up the neck.

But things get much trickier in the transition into the chorus. There’s more movement up and down the neck and some of the twiddles are a challenge. Bar 16 is the section I had to practice the most.

The harmonica solo is very simple. There’s lots of room for being more ambitious here (particularly with the chords just being a C drone) but I like the simplicity of the original.

  • Joni Mitchell – Both Sides Now (Tabs)

This has to be one of the most beautiful melodies of all time. Which makes for a perfect transition to the uke. The arrangement is based on the sublime acoustic version rather than the not so great later version.

Like many of Mitchell’s songs, the guitar part in Both Sides Now is a strummed open tuning with a few notes added on. That style doesn’t translate well to the uke. So I’ve taken it as licence to do whatever I like with the chords.

There’s nothing too challenging in the arrangement, so there’s plenty of room for interpretation. Be sure to play around with dynamics and timing to keep things interesting.

I came up with an intro/outro of my own so I encourage you to do likewise.

  • Avril Lavigne – Sk8er Boi (Tabs)

Before I get thrown in music jail, this was not my idea.

To be fair, the music of Sk8er Boi does have a few things to recommend it. I do enjoy the move from Em to Eb while keeping the two note riff on the A-string. And the chorus is undeniably catchy.

I went into this tab expecting it to be pretty straight-forward. But there are a few tricky twists in this arrangement. The trickiest bit comes in bars 18-19 with the pinkie playing the 10th fret. I tried a few different ways of playing this section and couldn’t come up with anything that felt natural.

  • Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah (Tabs)

I wrote up the chords for Hallelujah way back in 2008. But, since it’s a huge hit with ukulelists, I wanted to do an instrumental version as a little tribute to Leonard Cohen. And a tribute to Jeff Buckley since the intro is completely ripped off from his incredible version.

I try to keep most of my tabs fairly disciplined and work them up fully beforehand. It’s easier for people to read and learn that way. But be warned: this one I played pretty freely then tabbed out what I played. So the fingerpicking is all over the place.

In the verse the melody is everything played on the A-string plus the third fret of the E-string. Everything else is backing so should be played a little more softly. The chorus is more strange since the melody notes are played on the g-, C- and E-strings. I’ve notated all the melody notes with an accent > above them.
