Kala Mahogany KA-15S Soprano Ukulele
Slightly cheaper than Kala‘s most popular soprano uke (the KA-S), it’s hard to tell why you wouldn’t get this one instead. The only difference seems to be the white binding on the KA-S.

I bought one of these from a friend who was trying to pay for college courses. When I got it, it had terrible strings on it, and sounded the part. Just a few days ago, I took those off and put some Aquilas on. The sound improved, but not quite enough for me to fall totally in love with it, but hey, it sounds like an instrument now. If you can’t buy the LU-21 or the KA-S, this would be a good option provided it comes with Aquials already on it. At least with good strings I won’t be ashamed of how bad my “beater” uke sounds!
I think that, for the money, this is a pretty solid little uke. I bought one through Amazon and felt like for the ~$50 price point it played and sounded great.
In response to the other comment, this model now comes with Aquila strings by default and it definitely helps the tone.
The gig back kind of sucks (just a little fabric cover) but, again, for the money I like it. That being said, I’ve also been really impressed with the less well-known brands like Lohanu, Donner, and Hricane, and for an extra $20-$25 it might be worth picking up one of those in a concert or tenor size…
Got something to say?
