Kala Solid Spruce Top KA-SC Ukulele
Spruce has long been a popular choice of wood for the tops of guitars and mandolins. It is only recently that it has started being widely used for ukuleles such as in this range by Kala. But it’s a good choice of wood for certain types of player. The tone it produces is very immediate and punchy (conversely it doesn’t have a rounded, rich tone) which makes it great for players who really like to play loud and hard.

Checked out a BUNCH of concert ukes in this price range. This was by far my favorite. It projects really well… must be the spruce. It’s true that it’s “punchy and immediate” and (I suppose) less rounded. But personally, if I want rounded, I’ll play my guitar. This is a very uke-ish uke, and I couldn’t be more pleased. The action is great. The neck is about as comfortable as any concert uke I’ve ever held, including ukes at three times the price. Really.
