Augustino LoPrinzi is a famed ukulele and guitar maker who has designed instruments for the likes of Fender, Martin and Guild. Nowadays he’s making his own ukuleles with his daughter Donna Lo Prinzi in Florida.

As you would expect with a pedigree like that, his instruments aren’t cheap but they come with a great reputation.

The most striking feature of many of many LoPrinzi ukes are their unusually placed sound holes as you can see in this clip:

I have a solid koa tenor from LoPrinzi and the sound is simply wonderful. The sound, craft and finish were enought to impress a luthier friend of mine.
Just a note though, they only have one model with non-standard sound holes, not sure why that is so over emphasized here. Most of what they make are traditional looking ukes in a wide variety of solid woods and trim levels for very reasonable prices considering the quality of wood and craft. They do not keep a deep backstock so expect to wait a few months for custom orders (totally worth the wait though!)

Both Donna and Augustino are a delight to chat with. Was so impressed that I bought a used model 2concert and would not part with it.

Donna is building my koa tenor right now, and I’m heading down in a week and a half to pick it up! I have one of Augie’s guitars already – fantastic instrument – and the days are just crawling by.

You’re right, Dennis. They’re not just real talented, but they’re real good people.

Got something to say?
