There’s no doubting the visual appeal of the flamed maple on these Kala ukuleles. But the major contributor the the tone is the spruce top of the uke (making it a strident sounding instrument).

    Interesting that you say a spruce top, so favored by guitar makers, is “strident” on a uke. To me a spruce top sounds clear and crisp…while a koa top sounds muddy. What woods we like for a sound board is such an individual decision!
