Thanks, Bertrand, it’s added to the list. I knew that’s where most ukes come from but I didn’t realise there’s a scene there.

i play mostly punk rock music on my guitar and my uke. lately i have been getting a terrible pain in my right thumb when i strum. i am wondering how to prevent this and how to properly strum.

I am considering a Luna concert ukulele that is a solid cedar instrument. It is the Luna Guitars MO MAH Concert Ukulele Lizard Design. Can anyone give me any input about a solid cedar instrument sound compared to a mahogany? What should I expect? It looks like a pretty nice low priced instrument. Thanks for any input.

I have an old Aria soprano uke (1970s?) which seems to be well made from laminated mahogany. The top is very thin and my uke sounds much louder and more resonant than any solid-topped sopranos I have played. Open strings sound lovely but it actually produces a sort of choked string sound with unpleasant harmonics which seem at its worst around the middle of the fretboard. The break angle over the bridge saddle is great and the nut height seems ok so I tried taking the bridge saddle up with a plastic (credit card) shim; there may be some improvement but the intonation is now slightly out and I have come to the conclusion that the fretboard/neck may have insufficient relief. Holding the strings down at the 12th fret, there is a gap between the string and 6th fret, on each string, but not much.

Can anyone suggest any other potential causes for this problem or remedies for correcting a flat fretboard, please? My uke is currently strung with Aquila Nylguts ; I will try again with Worth BMs but I think the intonation wasn’t great when I tried them previously. Would higher tension strings create enough pull to create sufficient relief in the neck? It’s hard to imagine that they would over such a short scale length. Thanks for any help or constructive thoughts offered.
