Cosmo Jarvis, Operation Aloha: UkeTube

Favourite find this week is Cosmo Jarvis’s catchy, King-Blues like, bros-before-hoes anthem She’s Got You. Also this week (thanks to Oren) is super(ish) group Operation Aloha hewn from members of Gomez (it’s Ian Ball on uke), Maroon 5, Phantom Planet and others who met up on Hawaii and, inevitably, end up using a uke.

Familiar friends this week include Phredd, Craig Robertson and Katzenjammer.

Cosmo Jarvis – She’s Got You

Phredd – Zoo in Space

Katzenjammer – Tea with Cinnamon

Operation Aloha – Blue Eyed Son

Harper Phillips – Wading

Craig Robertson – If I Could Be With You

Oh, Be Clever – TiK ToK

Just come across something interesting; Hootie and the Blowfish settled out of court with people representing Bob Dylan for when they used his lyrics without permission in the song “Only Wanna Be With You” (they sing “well I’m Tangled up in Blue…”.

Apparently Bob gives permission if you ask him, I just hope Operation Aloha did, otherwise the dream will end pretty quickly.

The Katzenjammer vid combines my twin loves of uke and accordion :)

And I love the 11 part recorder ensemble in the Cosmo Jarvis song!

byjimini: Bob himself stole the lyrics from a traditional song, so I think they’re in the clear.

    krabbers: Glad you enjoyed it.

todd: I’m still not all that sure about that Kazenjammer song.

SamD: Uke and accordion does seem to be a growing trend.

    Nick: Thanks!

    Rob: Glad you liked it.

I love Katzenjammer! This isn’t my favourite song of theirs though. LOVED Zoo in Space! Brilliance!

I’m not sure about Katzenjammer either. It’s like all the elements are there for something utterly tremendous, but it somehow … isn’t. I mean, it’s okay, but it somehow seems less than the sum of its parts.

Just my opinion, of course (but I am right).

    I x

I normally really love their stuff, I just think this song is a bit weak. I know what you mean, but maybe it’s just a matter of personal taste. What i’d give for a balalaika bass though!

  12. Ian Emmerson February 23rd, 2010 5:53 pm

That’s what I mean – Balalaika bass? Wow! Drumkit made of biscuit tins and kettles? Wow! Four attractive women? Wow! Harmonies? Wow! Accordian? Wow! Great recording and video editing? Wow! Any one of those things is brilliant on its own, so what must it be like when you put it all together?

    Oh.
