Top Cat Theme (Tab)

Top Cat Theme (Tab)

With the hat, the class, the relaxed air of mischief, if Top Cat had lived in the 30s he’d certainly have been a uke player. But he was around in the 60s when no-one played the uke – there’s not even one in the Hawaiian episode. Nevertheless, the theme tune is crying out for a ukulele arrangement. A lot of jazzy turns in there – which do make it quite tricky to play.

There’s a lot of switching between picking, melody strums and supporting strums (in brackets in the tab) – which is probably best picked up by watching the video.

Top Cat – one of the highlights of my misbegotten and rapidly being forgotten youth. T.C., Benny the Ball, Fancy Fancy, Spook, The Brain, Choo Choo, and of course, Officer Dibble, or was it Dribble, T.C. had different names for him. It’s true, ukulele was off the radar in 1961-’62, but T.C. was indeed a uker at heart. And he even lived in a
tin pan alley. TV theme music was important then, and often was quite jazzy and quite good.

it’s amazing how well you’ve made that work and might i add brilliantly played.
    a good choice, good work.

Officer Dibble is correct. I haven’t heard that song in 42+ years, and scarily, there I was singing along, remembering almost all of the words. Thanx for the tabs, this is going to be big fun.

Ron: You’re right about TV music being better then. Now it all seems to be atmospheric stuff without anything you could hum.

cbf: Thanks very much. I had a lot of fun putting it together.

    suzalele: Hope you enjoy it.

    Mike: Cheers!

Rob: I loved it as well. I want to go back and watch them but I think it might spoil the memory.

That took me right back to watching telly before Mum called us for tea. I don’t know what’s become of today’s younger generation, my son’s influences are Star Wars and Ben 10, and not a decent tune between ’em. I remember playing Top Cat with Derek and Geraint in the playground* at school and this arrangement took me right back.

*I used to be Fancy or Chooch; more of a Benny the Ball now, sadly.

Spookingdorf: Star Wars has some very good tunes!

No ukulele? On the cover of the Top Cat Little Golden Book, Spook is playing a Banjolele!!

  11. Woodshed March 19th, 2013 7:25 pm

Kenneth: How could I have overlook that?!

  12. Kenneth March 20th, 2013 12:00 am

Woodshed: could it be because, unlike me, you’ve got a life?

    Uke on!!

  13. Woodshed March 20th, 2013 7:52 pm

Kenneth: No, that can’t be it!
