Effects Pedals, Stradele, Blueberry: Ukulele Window Shopping

This week I’ve spent far too long surfing through demos of effects pedals – the stranger and filthier the better. Death By Audio have a range of interesting pedals. My favourite being the Robot (demo here). But I think my favourite at the moment is the WMD Geiger Counter (demo here).

On a more traditional note, this week’s uke-I-want-most is this Joel Ekhaus Stradelele.

An interesting pair of Regals: a very handsome P’MICo and a Wendall Hall TeeViola.

Some incredibly fancy wood work on this Blueberry tenor.

I would love to have a uke by Joel Eckhaus for stage. Namely, the Sputnik.

I have seen and heard a stradelele, it is an instrument of great beauty and gorgeous sound. One would fit well in your hands, particularly for finger-picking.

That bluebird uke is really beautiful. I don’t tend to go for over-ornamented instruments but this one is very tastefully done.

    Those pedals sound like fun!

Oh my goodness! That Blueberry Tenor is absolute art! I would be afraid to play on it though because I wouldn’t want to mess around and scratch the woodwork (not even a little nic.)

I look at the Blueberry guitars and ukes from time to time and there are some I really like and some that are a bit too ornamental for me.

Jodi: I used to really like the Sputnik. These days I’d take a Stradelele over a Sputnik. I must be getting boring in my old age.

J-Hob: Does Rob MacKillop have the Strad you’re talking about or am I mis-remembering?

Lyndsey: You and me both. If I had that the bird would be beakless by the end of day one.

Phredd: The instruments are too ornamental for me. But I love their crazy guitar stands.

aye, you’re on the money – it’s Rob

J-Hob: Just watched a couple of videos he uses it on. Sounds great picked.

Sure does, it has a very clean and pure sound with dynamics in abundance. Construction is flawless too.

Blueberry ukes look very nice but they are way too braced and damn heavy so the uke simply doesn’t vibrates resulting in a uke that is not and not ”singing”much. The soundborad is way too stiff.

The Blueberry tenor is lovely, but I’m cynical enough to believe that over time beauty palls, and
each successive time you pick the uke up you’ll notice the beauty a bit less, until you stop noticing it altogether.

Brings to mind an old film with Peter O’toole, in which he was an official on an island in the Caribbean. The view from his home was a breath-taking beach scene, and yet whenever he ate out on the veranda overlooking the view, he sat with his back to it. He had gotten so used to it, he said that absolute beauty (over time) bores absolutely.

Put the Mona Lisa up on your wall and eventually you’ll just walk past it and not bother to look.

The Stradelele is certainly a good choice and great sounding, but I think the eBay seller should update his description “The Stradelele is currently played by Rob MacKillop and classical ukulele master John King.” Sadly, the latter master no longer plays.

shumanyo: That doesn’t surprise me at all.

Ron: I never understood the appeal of the Mona Lisa in the first place.

Carl: I think he must have written the description by Google.

rico: I think I’ll have to get me a WMD too (the feds will be tracking me after that statement).
