Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Instrumental)(Tab)

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Tab)

With Christmas being just around the corner, I thought I’d drop the fancy picking and go with a simple thumb ‘n strum arrangement here. Everything is either picked with the thumb or a downstrum with the thumb. To make up for it, there are a few jazzy things going on with the chords. But it isn’t Christmas without jazz chords.

    Great arrangement!

A suggestion: I don’t know what you use to edit your videos, but most of the programs I’ve run across allow you to export the audio. It would be very nice to be able to download an mp3 along with the pdf so that when you are learning the tune you have a reference recording without having to log on and go either here or to YouTube. It’s also much easier with mp3 player software to go play certain bits over and over, pause briefly while you master a phrase and then move on to the next one, etc.

I suppose another alternative would be to check the box that allows viewers to download the mp4 of the video, but that would preclude using many of the portable mp3 players to practice with. Not all of us have the smart phones. :-)

And hey… you have yourself a merry little Christmas too!

    Hello there, and Merry Christmas!
That little hobbit read my mind…I’d really like to have mp3s of the audio from your videos as well! I am new to your site and I have to say, I am very grateful for what you’ve done here. I have been learning the Sophie Madeleine songs that you have posted by listening to the mp3s on an iPod while playing along with the tabs/chords you so generously supplied I would love to be able to do the same thing with your songs as well. But maybe I’m too greedy…..
I’m Lisa, by the way. My web name, “pepa mahina”, means “paper moon”in Hawaiian. Thanks again for a fantastic blog! I will try to be active enough on your site to earn the right to a request sometime soon!

OK, now I feel silly. Did you just add a “buy mp3” tab, or did I just miss it the first time? Anyway, who cares? Yay!

I see….Judy is great, but I want you!

Thanks Al, This is beautiful! Soulful,
sad, and happy at the same time I’m going to work on this one. Merry Christmas to you.

  6. Lyndsey December 17th, 2010 9:45 pm

Aww! I LOVE Christmas music! Thank you very much for this arrangement because this is one of my favorite Christmas songs.

  7. Woodshed December 18th, 2010 10:15 pm

Hobbit: It’s a good suggestion. I might start doing that. For the ones already done, there are plenty of sites that’ll rip the audio off YouTube videos.

    pepamahima: Welcome to the blog!

Rob: Thanks, right back at you.

    Lyndsey: You’re very welcome.

  8. Jake December 20th, 2010 6:40 pm

Thanks for this. It is a great rendition.

Any chance you could do “I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus”? (It’s a bit less treacley and more up beat.)

On another front, I love the GUGUG Ruby tab you did. However, (and I might be being thick about it), I have tuned my Uke up half a tone to play along and I cannot get it to sound like GUGUG. Since you did the tabs for C tuning, what chords or chord shapes do I now need to play, e.g. for C, G7 Dm?

    Thank you very much!

  9. Woodshed December 22nd, 2010 12:08 pm

Jake: Treacly? Have you seen the original lyrics? I’d say that spirit definitely survives in the music. Whereas I Saw Mommy… is trash.

  10. Jake December 22nd, 2010 12:26 pm

    Woodshed, thanks for the reply.
I am still practising “Have yourself a merry little Christmas” and still grateful that you are transcribing these things! I worked out Ruby.

Hey, you don’t feel like doing Jimi Hendrick’s Little Wing in the original version do you? Plenty of people are looking for it and FacemeltingUke didn’t do it yet I think. Your chance for glory surely : )though perhaps not your first choice from the ’08 vote, judging by your posts.

  11. Shelley December 25th, 2010 2:52 pm

That was wonderful! I just bought my first Uke last week and am enjoying it sooo very much. Learning to play after many years away …… Merry Christmas to you and again thanks for the instrumental. It was the perfect way to start my Christmas morning!

  12. Woodshed January 1st, 2011 12:41 pm

Jake: Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve thought about doing it in the past so you never know.

Shelley: Thanks very much, that’s very sweet of you.

thanks for the tab and video – lovely arrangement. Despite you posting this in good time I finally got the hang of this on New Years Day. Oh well, roll on Xmas next year ! All the best for 2011.

Have been lurking since I started playing the tenor about a year and a half ago. I’ve always loved this song; your rendition captures the mood of the song perfectly. It’s an absolutely beautiful little arrangement, and I just want to thank you for it. My version is finally beginning to sound musical. Your site has been a place of help and encouragement. I got your e-book on chord progressions when I started, which was beyond me then, but hey – it makes sense now! Life is good, keep on uking. Thanks and have a happy little one.

tooney: Thanks! Glad you managed to get your head around it.

great – christmas has started in the shop I work in so I’m starting to feel festive. I’ve been practicing my ‘bah humbug’s’ for weeks.

I’m looking forwards to the winter after though, happy winter

  17. Suze December 8th, 2011 8:18 pm

Just a wonderful arrangement. As a relative newbie, it’ll take me a while, but that’s what the 12 days of Christmas are for. Many, many thanks for all the help.

    Great tabs on this site!

But in what tuning is this?

  19. Abbey September 29th, 2012 4:39 pm

So… I’ve been working on this for the family get together this season and started wondering, are there standardized fingerings for this? I feel like my fingers are all over the place and yours look so… contained. :)

By the way, this is a LOVELY version. Thank you so much for posting it!

Thank you for making my morning smile. I had just finished my Elvis Tribute performance last night and was searching for a nice ukelele Christmas tune to start my day. I’m enjoying listening to your version of The Christmas Song. You have a new fan. Keep making us smile here in Hawaii.
