The Fancy Dress Party, Darren Hayman: UkeTube

Darren Hayman went against the grain and spent January recording one track every day. A few of them featured ukuleles but not the one I’ve chosen. I’ve bent the rules to allow my favourite of the month: a tenor guitar song with Elizabeth ‘Allo Darlin‘ Morris. Another of his duets was with Helen Arney who also puts in an appearance this week (and will be on Robin Ince’s Uncaged Monkeys tour which I’m definitely probably going to).

Also this week: the UOGB with one of their less familiar covers, a wonderful video from The Fancy Dress Party, Johnny Marvin under the name Honey Duke and someone who shares my first name (even spells it correctly) and my love of cardigans.

If its got Agathe and Fine in it you just know its going to be good. Such lovely singers and they put a song together so well too.
Helen arney was very funny too, I tend to like when a comedy song stand up by itself as a song. Not just some funny words paired with some terrible badly played music. LIke Tim Minchin and Bill Bailey, great musicians and great comedians, gold!
    Great selaction as always!
    Cheers.

Wow, Matt Dahlbergs instrumental was very impressive too it must be said.!

Almost didn’t watch the Matt Dahlberg video, as I don’t really get much out of instrumental covers of songs (deja vu..?). However, it was excellent! Well arranged and very well played! Also enjoyed Honey Duke and his uke (best name ever!)

Is the instrument used in “I know I Fucked Up” a tenor guitar and not a uke?

  8. Woodshed February 6th, 2011 10:01 pm

Craig: He does write some excellent songs. He should be a superstar.

    Herman: Glad you liked.

Foinnse and SamD: Boy’s got skills. He’s sometimes a bit too Jake-lite for me, but this one is good.

Julian: Yup, that’s why I pointed it out in the intro. But it’s the best of the lot so I bent the rules and decided a four stringed instrument is close enough.

  9. Julian Faulkner February 6th, 2011 10:15 pm

I should read the intros more. XD

And bending the rules is like bending your sexuality! I approve.

Thanks for putting me up here with all these great videos. I appreciate it. I’m into the UOGB song this week. Makes me feel funky.

I always enjoy the natural candor of Ben’s vids. Especially liked that he included his false start on this one. (The only thing missing was “FUCK!!” or “SHIT!!”…)

Funnily enough I was watching Matt the other day and also his stuff with Ken and Aldrine.

    Good selection of stuff!

Re: Eva Walsh – I can always count on you to introduce me to people I should have been paying attention to LONG ago. She is quite charming!

Re: Ben Mealer – That video makes me crack up every freaking time I watch it.

  14. Woodshed February 7th, 2011 10:24 pm

Julian: Yes, bend everything you can get your hands on.

Ben: Thanks very much for your contribution. I loved it.

sanford: If I left my screw-ups in the videos would all be at least half an hour long.

Claudio: Yeah, I saw that video too. Interesting jam.

Jodi: Eva’s good but that gnome upstages her in every video.

Ben Mealer – That’s one of the best Uke hats I’ve seen so far!

  16. Dylan February 16th, 2011 12:53 am

Whoa. Eva Walsh is a revelation! I just spent a couple hours watching her originals and covers, and she seems just delightful. Anyone know where she’s from or based?

Helen’s song gave some good chuckles as well. Thanks for sharing, as always.

  17. Woodshed February 17th, 2011 11:09 am

Ambient: I need to start wearing hats – now I’ve got nothing else on top of my head.

Dylan: Glad you enjoyed them. Eva’s got a lot of good stuff.

  18. craig February 17th, 2011 2:49 pm

ahem…Ben’s video is very cool. But what he is wearing is a CAP. A hat is something different.

ahem…Ben’s video is very cool. But what he is wearing is a CAP, a flatcap. A hat is something different.

  20. Ambient Doughnut February 17th, 2011 2:53 pm

Hmm – I put it to you that a cap is merely a type of hat (and a flat cap a subset of that). There’s a venn diagram in here if anyone can bothered. ;o)

    Regardless, it’s a nice titfer.

  21. craig February 17th, 2011 3:23 pm

@Ambient; That is rather akin to calling a Sicilian an Italian…not recommended that you go there.

  22. Ambient Doughnut February 17th, 2011 3:32 pm

Well possibly but the flatcap is less likely to respond with threats and various parentage related insinuations.
