Seryn, The Black Atlantic: UkeTube

Official ukulele video of the year winner is Manitoba Hal. More on that next week. But this week there’s a new one from him and looks like a strong contender for this year’s contest.

Also this week a glorious song from Seryn (those indicoustic bands do like to hang out in gloomy rooms), rawuke covering Metallica, Raiatea Helm (who deserves the two Hawaiian Grammys that Tia Carrere has inexplicably won) and plenty more.

Manitoba Hal – Learned Pigs & Fireproof Women

Seryn – This Is Where We Are

Thanks to Chris.

The Black Atlantic – Heirloom

Mark Mandeville and Raianne Richards – I Ain’t Going Out There

rawuke – The Unforgiven

Tiny Instrument Revue – New Orleans

Jimmy and Carl – After Hours

Scott and Tom – Love Song Time Travel

Thanks to Erin.

Raiatea Helm

Love the Scott and Tom song! I love that I’m not the only one recording ukulele songs in my dorm room!

Another great Manitoba Hal track – Got a nice Tom Waits vibe to it.

So very excited that you’ve put our video up Al! Cheers so much, Scott and Tom take the nerdy duet of the week award though. Tiny Instrument Revue were ace as was the Metallica cover. Am I being big headed when I say it’s a good week?

So why even bother having any Grammy voting at all? Why bother asking people their opinions and pretending to care about how they feel
if we just know in our superior way that there are certain artists who just “deserve” the awards? Why not just skip the voting and the messy conflicting views and let those who know best determine and anoint the winners? Hey, sounds fair to me and evidently sounds fair to others, too.

Maybe we can define “Hawaiian” music in such a way that it’s what we say it is, and what we say it is only. Put it in the Bishop
Museum and put up a sign reading – “Hawaiian Music Born….Died….” Fill in those dates because the notion is going around that people who are making new music, trying new things, new sounds, aren’t making real Hawaiian music.
Real Hawaiian music isn’t being created anymore, it’s just being repeated, and this reliving of past glories is what we should be encouraging, not those pesky people who want to include something of themselves and someting of today to the music to keep it alive. Hawaiian music is ours and no on else’s because we say so and we throw temper tantrums. So there!

Since Tia Carrere is being trashed and by extension Daniel Ho…Daniel Ho is an artist at the highest level. He need apologize to no one for his music, while his uking is second to only a very few in technical proficiency and is the equal to any in Hawaii or anywhere else in musical artistry. His love of the islands is second to none and the notion that he somehow represents the dilution or the dying of Hawaiian music is insultingly stupid and stupidly insulting.

Wow, that Unforgiven is awfully nifty…don’t suppose you’re going to TAB it? Pretty please?
    P.S.
I like Dan Ho too, but don’t tell anybody

todd: Ukulele folk music? It’ll never work.

Herman: Hal is really rocking that sound.

Tally: I really like Tom’s glasses and braces.

    Ambient: Glad you liked.

Jimmy: It’s a pleasure to feature you. And not big headed at all. I really like this week’s videos. They’re perhaps not as varied as usual so I’m sure some people think it’s the worst week ever.

Ron: We’re all entitled to our opinions. I’m entitled to mine and the Grammy voters are entitled to be wrong.

pepamahina: I thought you wanted easier tabs! I might give it a go, though.

Or maybe “Dandelion”….I’m not sure now!

I think these all got better in list order, in logarithmic proportions! started off ho-hum, but ended on really terrific note: Raiatea Helm was incredible! Hats off also to Jimmy and Carl and Scott and Tom, with great songs, great delivery.

love Manitoba Hal’s stuff anyway and it’s quite amusing (but unsurprising) to find out he could well be a Ricky Jay fan.

  14. Manitoba Hal February 22nd, 2011 10:54 am

Hobbit I am indeed a Ricky Jay fan. Have been for sometime. Glad you picked up on the reference!

  15. Foinnse February 22nd, 2011 2:47 pm

Incidentally another rather lovely black atlantic song called ‘fragile meadow’ featuring the uke. Very nice.

Foinnse: Thanks for the links. I like their stuff.

Hobbit and Hal: Ricky Jay is a new one on me. I’ll investigate.

Bombolino: I would disagree with you. I thought they would good all the way through (but I would say that).

africatwin: I like the pig’s hat.
