Much as I was prepared to dislike Eddie Vedder’s album of ‘ukulele music’…I have to say I like it. He plays his ukulele like it’s a musical instrument. I don’t get the feel that this is just a musical bandwagon he jumped on. The songs are nicely recorded and easy to listen to.

I agree with Craig’s assessment of Eddie’s album and ukulele playing. I’m enjoying it. I also would like to visit the location where he made the video!

Oração was magnificent! Definitely one of the best songs I’ve heard in a while. Gotta love Brasilians and their chill style.

Sing Bird Sing – nice guy, fun song. And Helen Arney seems to be using a very large mic.

Thanks, I liked them all, especially Jonathan Stout (even though I don’t really like jazz) and GUGUG. I also really liked Oracoa, but who’s Nigel Spencer ?

My favorite ukulele music video of “Can’t Keep”:

Tiny Tim Overdrive – Can’t Keep

Searing, some may find this an uncomfortable
viewing experience. Should have been featured
on a uke blog ages ago. In my Uke Video Hall of Fame. Try it…

I can’t get enough of the Eddie Vedder track, and as much as i love the old-timey material that seems so suited for the ukulele, i’m very excited to see uke music head in this direction. (Between the new tune-yards and now this, 2011 is looking good so far in ukeland…let’s just hope we can stave off the inevitable backlash)

Helen Arney’s song is so cute I can’t even stand it.

You’ve got a great spectrum of songs this week. (And I’m not just saying that because one of mine is here…I LOVE Sing Bird Sing and G&O.)

More excited for Eddie Vedder’s album than I was before.

Gus Raucous was great! All the GUGUG stuff is primo! Also loved “a banda mais bonita da cidade – oração”. And Ron’s right, Tim Tim Overdrive’s version of Can’t Keep is fantastic! Thanks again Al.

Craig: I get the impression he’s genuine about enjoying playing the ukulele. I love the album too (although a few tracks could have been pruned).

Phredd: I’m assuming it’s somewhere in Hawaii.

Alex: Yeah, that video might be my favourite of the year so far.

Ron: I thought I had featured that one (apparently not – it must have got elbowed out late in the day).

sanford: I’ve been enjoying a lot of the new ukulele music this year too. Does the definition of ukulele stretch to Buke and Gass? Because that’s my favourite of all.

Tally: Glad you enjoyed the videos and thanks for your contribution.

Dino Divo: It’s good to see Gus back. It’s been too long.

Saw a bit of Buke and Gass on a NPR tiny desk concert feature and liked their Dirty Projectors/late-Beefheart approach. But I don’t recall them playing ukes (?)

    sting it, Hal

  13. Woodshed June 5th, 2011 8:41 pm

sanford: The ‘buke’ in the name is a baritone ukulele adapted to use six steel strings.

    ukuleletim: He always does.

Phred, the video looks like it was shot off either the Na Pali Coast of Kauai or the north shore of Molokai. That may be a more likely location since he has a home on that island.

  21. Woodshed June 10th, 2011 11:03 am

    Tom: Thanks for the info.
