Ukulele Videos of the Year So Far 2011

It’s nearly the half way point of the year. Already. So here’s a quick round-up of my favourite videos so far (in the order they showed up on the blog).

One thing I’ve noticed putting this together: the number of pro musicians using the ukulele has crowded out the bedroom players. Whether that’s established musicians picking up the uke (Amanda Palmer and Eddie Vedder), new acts with the uke up front (Misty Miller) or bands with the uke as part of the texture (Seryn and Keston Cobblers’ Club).

Leave your favourite(s) of the year in the comments.

Amanda Palmer & The Young Punx – Map of Tasmania (NSFW)

Seryn – This Is Where We Are

Keston Cobblers’ Club – Shoemaker’s Song

Nicholas Abersold – Those Punk Rock Days

tUnE-yArDs- Bizness

Pegasus Bridge – Yoko

Celisse Henderson – Me and You

Ukulele Bartt and James Hill – Kashmir

Matt Kresling – Ashes

Misty Miller – Tiptoe Through the Bluebells

Eddie Vedder – Can’t Keep

a banda mais bonita da cidade – oração

    Great choices

Great selection – looks like it’s a good year!

I love Tune Yards ‘Bizness’ but my fave out of these has to be A Banda Mais Bonita da Cidade’s ‘Oração’ – hadn’t heard of or seen them before. Simply joyous.

My fave has to be yoko

  4. The Captain June 22nd, 2011 8:46 pm

Thank you for reminding me/us that there are so many great songs. Map of Tasmania, Shoemaker’s Song, Ashes, … but so far I go with Yoko because it is fun to play. I like the chords and the melody. It is most definitely going to be tough at the end of the year. Good for us!

The self-consciously wacky ones I can do without and Tuneyards is interesting but JUST!A!BIT!TOO!SHOUTY!!!

I liked Keston Cobbler’s Club first time round cos that’s my type of thang, also Celise Henderson cos I loved it even though it’s not normally my type of thang, but how did I miss A Banda…? That’s just joy, groovy vid, someone’s singing a bit flat but who cares! Not me!

BTW Misty Miller = Buffy Summers, no? Just a bit?

    1. Uploaded on Jan. 2, and still reigning at the top of my list is the epic ukulele cover of an entire Beatles album. Deserves an award for the sheer audacity of it all:

Please Please Me Album – Ukulele Version
    WS64

    2. Sticking with the Mop Tops, my cover of the year:

Helter Skelter – the Beatles (cover)
    PippinMercury

Crank this up and it will split your skull apart and splatter gray matter over everyone in your neighborhood.

    3. One that always gets my hanky out, big softy
    that I am:

Studio 360: Shara Worden Performs “In the Beginning”
    studio360

    4. Good silly fun for the lucky ones who know the uke is about good, silly fun:

    The Wiggles – Ukulele Baby
    MoorePleaseable

    5. Ending with something classical from the Bad
Boys & Girls of Uke Britannia:

The United Kingdom Ukulele Orchestra plays –
    O mio babbino caro
    TheJeany90

On a side note, Al, if you haven’t yet, hop on over to the UCB site and see what they’re saying about Eddie.

Who did the video where the girl duplicated herself into a duet and sang about getting a girl by playing guitar (or better yet, ukulele)? That was my fav of the year so far.

@Ron I’m clearly not the only person who feels that way about Mr Vedder’s album then. I play the uke but that doesn’t mean I’m all over every song recorded on one. I don’t much care for his guitar based records and this one doesn’t do much for me either.

Not sure I agree with the article’s comparisons to Tiny Tim though. I like Tim.

  9. Ron Hale June 23rd, 2011 9:50 am

I like Tiny Tim, too, winkles.

Well, let me add a few more, Al-

    1. For vintage uke fans:

Trix Sisters – Ukulele Lullaby 1926 Since Ukulele
Lady Had A Ukulele Baby Josephine Trix on Uke
    warholsoup100

    2. A very hot band on a very cold night:

Queenstown Ukulele Orchestra – Long Train Running
    EntertainmentNima

    3. Taylor Swift. By far the best video of her on uke, in a small venue, not a huge arena:

Taylor Swift – Fearless (live at BBC Radio 2 London)
    SamNarase

  10. Mike Woodhouse June 23rd, 2011 10:22 am

    It’s gotta be:

Amanda Palmer & The Young Punx – Map of Tasmania

  11. Jenn June 23rd, 2011 5:04 pm

Well there are so many great videos here that it’s tough to pick just one….. I think I have to pick Seryn. This group comes from the same town I do and their sound truly embodies what’s special about that place, so I can’t help but love them!

  12. ukuleletim June 25th, 2011 5:19 pm

Damn. I want to jam with Celise. She has it going ON

  13. Jon June 29th, 2011 2:59 am

I am loving The Shoemaker’s Song.

  14. Woodshed July 1st, 2011 9:08 am

    08bunno: Thanks!

Ivy: Yeah, I love those Brazilians!

Captain: There have been a lot of good stuff this year. I was surprised looking back.

    Iain: Maybe a little bit.

Ron: Did I put one of Shara’s videos up? If not, I really should have done.

Pat McGarrigle: Bella Hemming. It was in last year’s vote.

winkles and Ron: I don’t mind people liking or not liking Eddie Vedder. But I can’t stand the ‘there’s too many people playing the ukulele’ bits in that post.

    Mike: It’s definitely up there.

Jenn: I might have to agree with you. Such a fantastic song.

ukuleletim: If you do, be sure to record it.

    Jon: Glad to hear it!

  15. winkles July 5th, 2011 6:29 pm

Woodshed: Agreed. You can never have too many people playing the ukulele.

Oh, and a friend who knows my love of the uke bought me the Eddie Vedder album, and actually it’s a whole lot better than I thought it was going to be. Humble pie for tea tonight I think.

  16. banter July 7th, 2011 9:40 pm

And what about Game Called Life? http://youtu.be/LdUEEp2lOjc
    It is my favorite one.

  17. Rodrigo "Lemoskine" August 3rd, 2011 5:54 am

Swell! I didn’t notice that our lil’ party took place here! Awesome! I’m telling everyone right now. Peace out, Woodshed, Bossa and Uke Hunt crew!

  18. Woodshed August 3rd, 2011 10:07 am

banter: Great song but it came out in 2009.

Rodrigo: That’s a great video. Probably my favourite of the year.
