Matthew Brookshire and Kelli Rae Powell – Any Hole in the Wall
Ukulele Festival of Britain 2011 Part 1

Nearly ten minutes of uke fun. Know you’re no
fan of festivals, Al, but this is your own. A bit of the pros such as James and Bartt, but mostly about the rest of us. And who would want to miss the massive busk in the middle of Cheltenham? Filmed expertly to boot.
Here’s a video that impressed me a great deal this week. In a very raw way it illustrates my favorite thing about the ukulele—suprising people with the amazing music that can come from four strings.

let’s deal with the whole Vedder thang first. yeah, I’m a little tired of my Google Alert for ukulele being all Vedder all the time, but damn, he does it right. good for you, Eddie!
next, Michael V. has proved me wrong, you can play slide ukulele and make it sound good. of course, you have to put steel strings on it and that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms.
lastly, while I’d love to say “woohoo! look at us, we be cool and on Uke Hunt and all” the prize this week really has to go to Matthew Brookshire and Kelli Rae Powell. fab song, great vid and, like Mr. Vedder and Michael V., it’s all about the music and not all about “hey look! I’m doing this on the ukulele! ain’t I hip?”
(BTW… thanks, Woodshed! it was once again I nice surprise to see my odd looking mug on UkeTube.)
Another favourite from this past week, Al. In performance at Duke of Uke. Fans will love this.
Very nice.

Excellent selection Al. The slide stuff is cool.
Here ya go,
The master himself, James Hill at the recent Ukulele Festival of GB. Pure Class

Michael V’s slide is certainly cool, what an interesting looking little uke too.
I really liked Snake suspenderez song too. Looks like a fun festival too.
Eddie Vedder is everywhere at the moment alright, but hey as Mr. Hobbit said he has done it quite well. Its hardly the best uke music out there, not by a shot I feel, but good all the same. There is defintely one or two that are especially good. Anyway, soon it will be forgotten about I’m sure!
I can’t think of any specific videos to post from this week but I might think of something.
Cheers Al, -F
We are partial to sweet duets, so the “Any Hole in the Wall” video was our favorite this week. Thanks for posting it, Al
Thanks for the link, Tim. Best of the week for sure.
Vedder is fantastic. What a tremendous talent all round! Such an inspiration for me to play my uke
Matthew and Kelli’s song is a real gem. In addition to their exquisite vocal duet, the guitar and ukulele are also beautifully paired. So often when I see guitar and ukulele together, there seems to be little thought given to how to let the strengths of each instrument contribute to the overall sound. Here the harp like quality of the uke supported by the deepness of the guitar really makes for a greater sound than could be accomplished with either instrument alone. Gorgeous!
Brandi Carlile and the Twins: “Oh Dear:
Has anyone worked out the chords from any of Eddie Vedder’s new album?? I’d love to play some of his music.
I’ve obviously been spending too much time on facebook, I was looking for the “like” button on Sanford and Pep’s comments.
@Paulmoody He is selling the songbook on his website, I pre-ordered it, but it still hasn’t arrived.
I must get active on your site again wood! I need more ukulele hunt in my life
Eddie Vedder continues to astound me!
Thanks for that @Skwidspawn! I’ve ordered one myself!!
Skwidspawn: So right. It really is an album that is coverable by amateur, novice ukers (me.) It sounds good no matter who’s playing it, and I admire that about any song/album.
Paul – longing to belong elsewhere on this site. It’s pretty easy to play. But hard to sing like Eddie does!
@Ambient Doughnut, any chance you could post the link on here of it? I had a scout around but couldn’t find it
Sure:

(but all I did was put ‘longing to belong’ in the search box in the top right corner)
:o)
I know a lot of uke players are kinda miffed about the amount of attention that Eddie is getting for his album, and I agree that it’s not a very technical album, or even really that difficult at all. It is, however, full of great lyrics and of course Eddie’s skill/sound as a musician. I love it, and I keep listening to it over and over again.
