Givers, Lisa Hannigan: UkeTube

I’ve spent the entire course of this week squinting through a haze of tears thanks to the new Bon Iver album. So I was either going to love or hate the first ukulele cover of it I heard. As luck would have it, Kina Grannis was up to the job. Also this week is Lisa Hannigan duetting with a uke, the first Gaga ukulele cover I’ve liked and Givers rocking it out the ass.

Givers – Saw Your First

KYAS – Bad Romance

Kina Grannis – Michicant

Tiffany Topol – Sad/Glad

Kevin Hufnagel – ukulele #1

Vincent Cortese – Roy Smeck 1926 Warner Brothers Vitaphone Recreation

Lancer Simbolon – Sinanggar Tillo

Bosko & Honey – Honeymoon

Nicholas Abersold – All summer long (Hands down)

Cathy Davey and Lisa Hannigan – Blue Moon

Thanks to Larry.

I’ll take Danielle’s epic “Bad Romance” and the Leftover Cuties’ equally fine “Poker Face” over this splash and flash every time, Al. Surprised he didn’t play it behind his head and with his teeth. Or both at the same time. Too cool for the Roy Smeck spin, I suppose. Now, if he’d reversed uke and switched hands in the middle…

Sophie Madeleine is in the midst of a 30 day cover song video project begun on June 25, with “One Fine Day”. Fans should look into this. She just uploaded #8.

No one commented on it at the video, so maybe I’m imagining the 007 reference from Bosko.

Eeeee I too was listening to Kina’s cover on youtube a few days ago, any chance of the chords + lyrics? It’s so beautiful :)

Ha! Thats funny, I was just looking into Givers today and was going to suggest them but you are obviously ahead of the game as always! They look like they would be a fun band to go see.

    Cheers -F

I totally dig the instrumental Gaga cover.

I liked the way Tiffany’s video was shot.

And I found it fitting Vincent’s right hand was just a blur (5fps?) on the Smeck tune.

Oh, and Kina’s song was beautiful

I has a happy. seeing Bosko & Honey always does that.

    loved Lancer Simbolon.

    ditto Nicholas Abersold.

I think that’s the best thing I’ve ever seen/heard from Mr. Cortese, and that’s saying something.

I have to concur with ukuleletim re: Tiffany’s video. she also has a great voice. plus, I just liked the song.

Givers did indeed rock. I’d pick the nit that the vocals could be pumped up a bit. loved the energy.

lastly, the completely worthless (but nonetheless highly coveted *cough*) “Howlin’ Hobbit Digs This” award has to go to Cathy Davey and Lisa Hannigan and their take on Blue Moon. lovely!

Ron: Yup, definitely be including some of Sophie’s covers on the blog.

Tess: Yes, a very good chance. That album is incredible.

Foinnse: I looking forward to their new album – there doesn’t seem to be a way to buy it in the UK yet.

ukuleletim: I love watching Vincent’s videos – a real glimpse at authentic Smeck technique.

Hobbit: I enjoyed the Lisa Hannigan too, but it’s going to take a lot to convince me she did the right thing splitting with Damien Rice

guess I don’t have a memory of Lisa Hannigan with Damien Rice. were they going by a band name that I might remember better? got a link?

  8. Nicholas Abersold July 7th, 2011 9:23 pm

Hey Al, thanks a lot for featuring me! I love the other videos. KYAS’ rendition of Bad Romance is absolutely stunning.

  9. Woodshed July 8th, 2011 1:59 pm

Hobbit: It was Damien Rice’s solo act rather than a band – which might explain the friction.

    Nicholas: Always a pleasure.

How is Lisa picking this cover of Blue Moon? I can’t figure it out! I know the chords, just not the pattern. Help, please!
