Manitoba Hal, Bella Hemming: UkeTube

A mixture this week of angel voiced young girls (including Bella Hemming and Agathe and Fine) and beardy bluesmen (including Manitoba Hal and Blue Dean).

The Garfunkel and Oates song contains a cavalcade of cursing. You should know that by now. I’m going to stop issuing warnings.

Bella Hemming – Goodbye

bigfrankiej3211 – Tush

Blue Dean Carcione – The ballad of Jesse James

if BEARS were BEES – I don’t know what I expected

Thanks to Snacks.

Taimane – Black Widow

Agathe and Fine – I Call the Stars

Garfunkel and Oates – I Don’t Know Who You Are

Manitoba Hal – Baby Please Don’t Go

Billy Uke Scott – Lady Of Spain

Kate and Janelle – Motel Blues

This week’s round-up is lovely as usual.

That Taimane video is so much more appropriate to who she seems to actually be than that Tico Tico video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Kpb_oL78oE Thank goodness she worked that out!

    Bella Hemming is “slow food”

Taimane’s video is nice but ‘am missin’ the ukulele sound!
With Agathe and Fine I want to drink a cup of thea!
Garfunkel and Oates – I Don’t Know who they are! but funny, Baby Please Don’t Go is the best thing that could follow after all those nice… and then sudenly Kate and Janelle may be mensioned too.

    rock on, Hal!

like this whole spooky sexy thing Taimane has going on. nice to see a different direction taken with a ukulele. it’s like uke for adults.

Agathe and Fine are lovely and indeed sing like angels but they really, really have to:

    a) choose less reverby places to record and/or…
    b) EQ the bejaysus out of that guitar (pre- or post-recording) and/or…
    c) use a nice little parlor guitar

…because that monster dreadnought is just too boomy. especially when she starts strumming instead of finger-picking.

scope out the guitar in Garfunkel and Oates for a good example. and speaking of G&O, was it just my computer hiccuping or did they intend to turn off the audio towards the end of their vid?

Lady of Spain was a slightly oddball but totally pleasing little bijou.

I like Kate and Janelle so much I’m going to hit “submit” on this comment and wander over to YouTube to check out more of them.

Aurora: I’m really glad she didn’t go in that direction as well. I think I had a go at that video when it came out.

Herman: I’m not really sure what the term ‘slow food’ means but I like it.

Hobbit: I get what you’re saying about the sound. But I do enjoy the locations they choose.

Amazing selection this week, Al! I absolutely ADORE that song by If Bears Were Bees. Other great finds: bigfrankiej3211 (I didn’t even know Epiphone made ukuleles, but then again there’s so much I don’t know), Blue Dean Carcione and, of course, Kate and Janelle.

Howlin’ Hobbit, re: the Garfunkle and Oates song: This is just conjecture, but I think it’s that they’re not actually playing…they sort of fade themselves out and are then just sort of…mime-strumming and lip syncing. So that as opposed to having actually turned off the camera audio.

Bella Hemming keeps getting better and better; this is a great video and song. If Bears were Bees write a good tune, too. Kate and Janelle’s harmonies are so sweet and the ukulele fits the song so well. Again a great selection.

    Nicholas: Glad you enjoyed it.

Carrie: Yeah, that’s definitely what they’re doing.

Captain: Seems like Kate and Janelle are this week’s favourites.

I really enjoyed the ballad of Jesse James. I’m all about the stomp box.

Taimane is very talented and is one of my favorites.

Motel blues was a sweet lil song, as was good bye.

    Slide Ukulele rules!

@Carrie — so it was intentional. that’s good, because I was having all sorts of computer issues yesterday and was worried that was another symptom.

  11. Carrie Griffin September 11th, 2011 5:16 pm

Howlin’ Hobbit: Yeah, the comments on the video seem to suggest a lot of other people were in the same situation. Meanwhile, I think I just killed the joke by explaining it. Sorry, everyone!

  12. Howlin' Hobbit September 11th, 2011 5:19 pm

@Carrie — it might just have been one of those “slideshow and pointer” jokes. so you probably didn’t kill it. :-)

  13. Cappers September 11th, 2011 5:42 pm

I love the Manitoba Hal song and that Billy Uke Scott, wow that’s some fast strumming going on!

  14. Woodshed September 12th, 2011 11:30 am

    sharp21: Glad you like.

Cappers: I’m surprised I hadn’t heard about Billy Uke Scott before.
