Elizabeth Mitchell, David Byrne: UkeTube

The first video this week is Elizabeth Mitchell from the must-subscribe Smithsonian Folkways channel. It’s full to bursting with great performances and mini-documentaries like Wu Man investigating music from China’s borderlands, the African diaspora in the US, Grupo Cimarrón from Columbia and Ella Jenkins playing bari for the class.

Lots of old friends this week including Wilfried Welti (tabs for his piece here), Howlin’ Hobbit, WIUO, Peter off of UOGB and krabbers. Plus some new friends and one sworn enemy.

Just stumbled upon Welsh harpist, Catrin Finch, only a couple weeks ago, Al. There are videos of her playing with Cimarron.

She did a BBC documentary on the harp which can be watched in one hour-long video or in separate parts. Good stuff.

I actually found the time to watch every video this week and am very glad i did.
Elizabeth mitchell has been a favourite of mine for a while every since ‘little bird’ was featured on futurama and that is a lovely version of froggy went a courting.
Wilfredi welti’s bach cello suite worked impressively well on uke, if theres a tab for that i’d love to learn it myself (although i should probably just spend the money and buy john kings classical book first).
Krabbers original was great gave that a couple of listens and really really enjoyed it as i did with ellen and carla.
The mr nonouke was great, well the playing was great but the editing was odd. Not bad just odd.
Also nothing suffers for the inclusion of david byrne, he is one sexy and talented man.

Wow! Thanks for featuring my vid on UkeTube, Al! Really liked the other vids too, thanks! :-)

cardboardfrog: A free ukulele tab for the bach cello suite minuet is available, just look at the top of this page, Al already posted them! (Thanks, Al!)

    Best Regards
    Wilfried

Al, I really thank you for featuring my video!!! Such an honour!
But I know, I have to improve my editing ( as my playing, but it is just the beginning!) :-)
    Best wishes
    Arnaud

Wilfried: Very impressive playing! I’m scared to even attempt that one.

Nonouke: Loved the video. I’ve never even attempted editing so you’re ahead of me.

Peter: It’s a lovely, lovely, lovely horse.

  8. WIUO December 10th, 2012 7:17 pm

We love the horse! We love all the videos. Such lovely company to be in. Thanks Al!

WIUO: Always a pleasure to have a new WIUO video.

  10. Howlin' Hobbit December 12th, 2012 5:24 pm

another UkeTube where I pretty much dug all of them.

always good to see Krabbers and Wilfried in the mix. a new video from the WIUO is likewise a treat. and a solo video from Peter Brooke Turner?! excellent.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the Froggy Went A Courtin’ video. both the music and the video itself. I’m probably just too used to seeing the song spoofed in cartoons and such.

thanks for including my video in the crop!

Hobbit: Glad you enjoyed them. Thanks for your contribution!

Don’t where else to post this, but is this Macca rocking a uke?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh1eDSLKomU&feature=player_embedded

One for this weeks uketube? (although to be honest I think the song’s pretty average…)

  13. Woodshed December 13th, 2012 10:32 pm

Kempo: I thought it was pretty good. Better than I was expecting anyway. I think it’s a tenor guitar he’s playing. Which I’d be willing to overlook if the song was a bit better.

  14. Kempo December 13th, 2012 11:58 pm

I suppose so, I had visions of ‘Thumbs Aloft’ McCartney attempting ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’…

…over to UU, find the thread, follow the link…

Actually Macca’s guitar sounds pretty wild on that and it’s always good to see Grohl rip it up, I’m supposing the song is probably something they threw together, so props to ’em, I suppose they can’t write Let It Be/Everlong everyday.

Kempo: Thanks for the link. Good for them!
