Ukulele Video of the Year 2012: Nominations

Last year was another golden year for ukulele music. And it’s time again to spread the love for your favourites in this year’s vote.

For the first stage, everyone gets to nominate up to 5 videos – leave them in the comments (click here for the comments section if you reading by email or RSS). From those nominations, I’ll cobble together a list of ten (ish) that will be voted on in the next round. Use whatever criteria you like. I went with whichever videos/songs I enjoyed most.

The Rules

The rules remain as ramshackle as ever:

– There has to be a ukulele in there.
– Videos must have been originally uploaded in 2012.
– Videos must be publicly available online.
– Maximum of five nominations per person.
– Post your nominations in the comments.
– Nominations close midnight Tuesday 5th February.
– Ten(ish) acts with the most nominations go into the final vote with their most nominated song going forward.
– No prize. Just the love and admiration of the heaving masses.
– No sucking up by nominating me.

Don’t panic if your comments don’t show up right away. First time commenters and comments contains a few links can get held back for spam checking.

Ali Ingle – Ribcage
Keston Cobblers’ Club – For, Words
Mike Love – No Regrets

Wasn’t a half-bad year for the uke, Al. Notice you list two from WOTE. Didn’t they do “Little Boxes” last year? Not nominating it right now, but it was good and just thought you’d have listed it.

Maybe it wasn’t last year. I’ll check… March.
I’ve seven or eight I’m trying to winnow down, but someone should pick that one. Could win.

Surprised you did list “Ain’t My Friend.” Know you’re not keen on Jessica. Keen as I am on her I don’t think she’ll be one of mine.

Eight or nine I’ve been trying to compress down to five. None will win anyway. Not the point.

  2. Woodshed January 30th, 2013 10:31 pm

Ron: Yep, I included her. It might not be my favourite but there’s no denying it caused a stir. Looking forward to seeing your nominations.

    1. Un Derecho de Nacimiento
    1derechodenacimiento

In support of the ‘Yo Soy 132’ movement in Mexico.

    2. Le Clint (UK Sub)
    Maxime Martin-Piccone.

From France. Not a uke song video. Has some brief uke noodling towards the end. For fans of cowboys, westerns. And swearing.

    3. Neno Belan & Fiumens ft. Ljetno kino –
ULICAMA GRADA (Pjesma Srece) official video
    djiridjiri

From Croatia. Feel-good song/story. Uke-grumps need not apply.

    4. Voodoo Marmalade apresenta “Parara” –
    Original Ukulele song from Portugal
    VoodooMarmalade

Some spice. Got some Latin dance moves you’ve been hiding? Time to bust them out.

    5. family treasures
    kpavula

From Latvia. Close up and intimate. Member of
    Sus Dungo.

  4. sanford(andsong) January 30th, 2013 11:19 pm

Clicked on the Eddie Vedder link expecting to see what I now know is “Can’t Keep”…a 2011 nominee(!) I sadly realize how far out of the internet uke loop i was last year.

I’ll nominate Welti’s Gymnopedie (because i love it, and I need the reminder that i still have to learn it….) as well as Stephin Merritts’ Andrew in Drag (because you can’t beat the story it tells)

  5. Carrie Griffin January 30th, 2013 11:19 pm

I nominate Mariah Carey, Jimmy Fallon, and The Roots doing “All I Want For Christmas Is You” over “Call Me Maybe.” Despite sort of begrudgingly likely Call Me Maybe and despite the ukulele being hidden way in the background on this one.

I’m nothing if not a fan of Christmas music so I’m also going for John Roderick doing “The Week Between” while a camel eats some mysterious items in the background.

And I’ll thrown in the Leftover Cuties cover of “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” though largely because I forgot they uploaded that video for “Places To Go” a year ago.

  6. Carrie Griffin January 30th, 2013 11:19 pm

Oh! And I second “Andrew In Drag.”

  7. Woodshed January 30th, 2013 11:44 pm

Ron, sanford and Carrie: Thanks very much for the nominations!

  11. Wilfried Welti January 31st, 2013 9:38 am

I want to add a few suggestions for a few videos I found really amazing in 2012:

Se L’Aura Spira by Agathe Peyrat(?):

(So short, but I could listen this for hours!)

    The Owl’s Dance:

(a truly hypntic ukulele solo composition)

    Breakulele Live by Friendly Fred:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T07jdJ-8ovs
(Minimalistic, but gooood. I bet you never heared the ukulele like this before!)

    Best Regards
    Wilfried

  18. Maria January 31st, 2013 1:23 pm

    1. I think Sarah Humphreys’ Wilco “Jesus Etc.” cover strongly deserves a mention (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbLYZ62leDw&feature=player_detailpage&list=UUjwVackDoOsvidyyF3QueJg), at least I vote for it.

Thanks very much for all your votes. I’ll get it up totted up and the vote will be next week.

  45. Woodshed February 9th, 2013 9:00 pm

Terry Sasaki and Tim Abrams: I’m afraid Tyrone and Lesley’s Ukulele Heart was 2011 so I couldn’t include it.

  46. seamus4string February 13th, 2013 4:13 am

    I can’t believe WOTE didn’t make the cut……

  47. Lesley Fowkes February 13th, 2013 9:55 am

I am a fool, didn’t realise the deadline had crept past me – thank goodness my favourite video has already been nominated. John Bianchi is such a great performer, lovely voice, specialises in wonderful old songs from the 20’s and 30’s and plays fabulous uke and banjo-uke to boot –

For what it’s worth, “The Dumber They Come, They Better I Like ‘Em”….

  48. Woodshed February 13th, 2013 10:25 am

seamus: A recount suggests they did. I need a better system for doing the nominating.

    Lesley: Glad he made it!

  49. seamus4string February 14th, 2013 12:46 am

Thank goodness for the recount process. Too bad we couldn’t get it right over on this side of the pond so many years ago
