Manitoba Hal, Lemos: UkeTube

One of those weeks where there were more videos I wanted to include than I could squeeze in. Luckily, Donnie’s covered a few of them. Another I like is this cover of When I’m Cleaning Windows – I think she does a wonderful job of making the song fresh (and a bit Kate Nash-y).

Making the cut this week are: James Hill’s chop stick routine is coming along nicely and now has added comb. It’s still a gimmick, but what a gimmick, Lamos (who mentions Ukulele Hunt before the songs starts), Manitoba Hal (whose new album is essential listening) and Ryan Spendlove.

    several here that never disappoint me. in order of appearance: Manitoba Hal, Ukester Brown, Krabbers, Sanford and Song.

    I dug Jen Sygit (and Drew Howard). ukulele and fiddle are the new ukulele and kazoo. or maybe the new ukulele and accordian, I never can make up my mind.

    Ryan Spendlove was a pleasant surprise. for the first few moments he sounded like another dude using one of the 4 or 5 indie boy voices (there are the same amount of indie girl voices and they bore me too) but it turns out he can sing. yeah! and he fingerpicks up a storm on the uke too.

    Hal: You’re welcome. And congratulations on the album. I’m loving it.

    Hobbit: I like indie boy and girl voices so I liked it all the way through.

    @woodshed – it’s not that the voices are so horrible, it’s the whole stylistic thing where it seems that they’re slavishly copying some other artist’s style. I couldn’t tell you which artists–cuz I’m an old fart and have no idea who’s fab right now–but the repetition of a few vocal styles is obvious and it gets old pretty quickly. it makes it hard-to-impossible to identify just who’s doing a given song if you’re just hearing them and don’t have like a YouTube vid or the tags on an mp3 to refer to.

    I’m for sure not “fab” but I sound like me (for better or worse). the folks I most admire sound like themselves.

    @krabbers – high notes? tighten your shorts pilgrim and sing like the duke! <– obscure Dr. Demento reference.

    @JCMcGee – not many left nowadays. though it occurs to me I left out two things…

    1) some blues singers fall into the trap of trying to ape some other persons style (I know I did when I initially started playing in that style, many moons ago) and…

    2) you can pretty much always tell a Bobby McGees tune with your eyes closed too. :-)

    As far as unique voices go, it’s sometimes difficult to tell whether someone’s vocal style is a contrived apeing or true natural expression. It made me think of something the guitarist Henry Kaiser said about having your own “voice” on the guitar: “Be yourself. Don’t try to be someone else. Your grandmother should be able to recognize your playing if she heard it on the radio.”

    This may be a bit of a stretch (and it depends on how close you are to your grandmother i suppose), but i think it’s very applicable to singers. Do your friends and family immediately recognize you when they hear you sing? Or do they think “who are you trying to fool”?

    Scott: That’s a fine pair to have in the same place.

    Jimmy, Hobbit and sanford: I’m glad I can’t sing a note so this is one argument I can sit out of.
