Ukulele Hunt iPad App

Uke Hunt has an iPad app! It’s free so you can go to iTunes and download it right now. Or just search for “Ukulele Hunt” in the iTunes Store. So long as you don’t mind a bit of, “Infrequent/Mild Profanity or Crude Humor”.

What’s it for?

For a long time it’s been a frustrating experience getting my How to Play Ukulele ebooks onto an iPad. Apple decided you couldn’t download zip files to an iPad so you have to download to a computer and transfer the files over.

Which is a shame because the iPad is such a great place have tabs and learn playing. Also there’s a whole lot more you can do on there that you can’t do with a PDF.

So I set to work on making an app with, Uke Hunt designer, Ben Lew and Ryan Waggoner.

And I think it’s turned out fantastically well.

What’s in it?

The app gives you a way to download ebooks and tabs without any hassle. All the ebooks are optimised for the iPad. It also gives you streaming video and audio examples right in the page.

AppGif1

Free eBooks: The app comes pre-loaded with “So You Just Got Your First Ukulele…” There’s also a completely updated guide to reading ukulele tab that you can download free.

Paid eBooks: Most – but not all – of the How to Play Ukulele ebooks. Those currently in app are:

– How to Play Ukulele Strums
– How to Play Christmas Ukulele
– Christmas Ukulele 2
– How to Play Classical Ukulele
– Now to Play National Anthems
– How to Play Slide Ukulele

Free Tabs: You can download free tabs including classical, Christmas and traditional music.

Paid Tabs: Because PayPal fees make it pointless, I haven’t been able to sell individual tabs before. But iTunes just takes a flat percentage so now you can by single tabs. For example, if you don’t want to buy the whole Anthems ebook you can just buy the UK anthem or the US anthem individually at the 69p/99c level.

How to Use It

There’s a guide to using the app here.

iPad Advantages

The big advantage with the app is that everything you need is right there on the page. You can:

– Listen to audio in the app. Play it, pause it, shuffle around while you’re looking at the tab.

– Watch videos in the app.

– There’s no messing about transferring files.

– Pay in your own currency

iPad Disadvantages

Because of the way iTunes works I can’t offer the refunds that I do with the ebooks. There’s no way for me to do it at all.

It’s harder to get your stuff out of the app. There is an ability to print single tabs and each section of ebooks individually. But you can’t print the whole thing off like you can with the ebooks.

Price Drop!

I’ve dropped the prices of the ebooks way down for now. So it isn’t a huge cost for people who have bought the ebooks before and want the iPad version.

But even if you don’t want to spend any money there’s plenty in there for free.

Questions and Comments

This is just the first release of the app. So if you have any suggestions, questions or comments leave them in the comments below or send me a message.

Oh, great! I had more or less stopped trying to use the iPad with tabs, extracting PDFs and transferring them was always a tiny bit too much faff. What an unexpected bonus! Thanks.

Milko: Thanks! It is a pain. Dropbox and forScore have made it a bit more of a pleasurable experience for me than it used to be though.

I’ll be the first to ask…. Android?

  4. Woodshed December 17th, 2013 9:10 am

Hunter: Not much chance, I’m afraid. My visitor numbers from Android devices are way lower than iOS. And financially it was a big stretch for me to do make the iPad app.

Totally understand, just thought i’d ask. Still love your site and everything you do. Have a great Xmas!

Great work. That`s a shamne about Android, but I`ll just keep using my girlfriends ipad for this app! Brilliant work mate!

Good effort Al, now I have an incentive to fight the kids for the ipad. Will probably have to buy a new printer now!

    Hunter: Thanks! You too.

    Dan: Thanks very much!

    Alistair: Happy fighting!

You are the greatest human being in the history of the world. Now if there was a way to transfer my purchases of your books into the iPad app that would be spectacular… but I bet Apple’s store policies make that impossible.

Bob: That’s taking it a bit far!

Mine seems stuck. I just downloaded the app. Started looking around a bit, saw the FREE O Christmas Tree tab and downloaded that. The little download meter nearly instantly spun around to just a small wedge and stayed there. Now it won’t do anything. I tried deleting the app and reinstalling but it is still stuck in the download. Now what???

  12. Woodshed December 21st, 2013 6:58 am

Phil: I’m very sorry about that. I was going to recommend uninstalling and reinstalling but then I saw your comment. I didn’t even know that was possible. I’ve passed the problem on to the developer and hopefully it’ll be fixed in the update.

Thanks for letting me know about it.

    Hi,
thank you for this wonderful website. i played uke as a teen, then stopped once i discovered girls. I am picking up where i left off, got your dummies book for ipad. I downloaded this new app and when i try to download something it crashes and goes back to my home page. I am going to keep trying. Just wanted to let you know.

  14. Woodshed December 22nd, 2013 5:13 pm

Mitch: Sorry about the problems. There is an update in the works which fixes a few things and also gives us a way to find out what’s causing the crashes. So hopefully it’ll be fixed before too long.

It occurred to me that it has been a while since I tried the ipad app which locked up on me on the first attempted download as I noted above. Anyway, I saw there have been a couple updates but when I reinstalled it today same deal. It tries again to download the prior tab, spins the download meter to nearly complete then stops just short of finished and is then locked up, won’t do anything. Sadly, I took it back off. Poop! I really wish it would work for me! This is on an ipad air if that helps your developer sort this out… :( I thought removing an app removed all associated data, clearly it remembers where it was previously because it just tries to do the tab download again by itself. Weird!

Phil: Argh! Sorry about that. I’ll look into it.

    Is this still available Al?
Searched the App Store but nothing came up

  20. Woodshed February 4th, 2018 10:35 am

Perry: Sorry, it’s not available anymore. I should take this post down.
