Uke Hunt’s 1,000th Post

Decorations are hanging in the street, people’s faces are lit up with cheer, kids are singing merrily in the streets. All of them waiting for that special day: the 1,000th post on this blog. It’s very flattering that the whole world has been brought together by the event.

Unbelievably, those 1,000 posts have collectively been looked at 12 million times. A big thanks to everyone who has made a contribution to that 12 million. And a massive thanks to everyone who has contributed to 8,000 comments on those posts.

But enough about the past. On to the future.

Here’s some things you can expect to see in 2010:

Focus on ukulele stuff – I’ve been following this policy for a while (with the occasional exception). There’s no point putting up chords for non-uke songs when you can easily find them on Chordie or Ultimate Guitar – particularly now that there’s so much uke stuff to cover. So I’m only doing chords for uke songs. But there’s still justification for doing tabs for guitar songs on the uke.

New ebooks – the next two ebooks will probably be a classical ukulele tab book (I’ve got a few arrangements together for that) and a book on ukulele soloing (which will be called How to Shread the F**k out of a Ukulele unless someone can convince me otherwise).

Fewer posts – I say it every time I do one of these things and it never happens.

And some things I’m considering and would love your feedback on:

Site Redesign – I’ve been thinking about getting a pro to overhaul this site and, even more urgently, How to Play Ukulele. If you’ve got any suggestions on what should be done or who I might hire leave a comment.

Private Forum/Site – Quite a few people have suggested I set up a forum. I wouldn’t want it to be a ‘the more the merrier, everyone’s welcome’ thing. Because it isn’t and they’re not. I’m lucky that most people who visit the blog regularly get what it’s about and why it is the way it is. But the bigger the site gets the more people there are who completely miss the point. And also there are a lot of people who want me to do stuff but don’t want to take 30 seconds to say thanks.

So I was thinking about a ‘members only’ section (either invited or paid) with a forum, tutorials, lessons, tabs etc.

Road Trip – I’m more tempted to go round the UK (and further afield) visiting ukers than I used to be. There are still a few things holding me back: it’s a two person job and I have no idea who I’d do it with (plus I don’t drive); and I have no camera skills, editing skills or interpersonal skills.

Tutorial Videos – I keep getting requests to do these from people who don’t realise how much of a total disaster they would be. I think I should stick to what I’m occasionally competent at.

I vote for “How to Shread the Fuck out of a Ukulele”. Anyone who tries to convince you to clean it up will get some serious shit from me. Also, I love the “Members Only” idea!

    Congrats on the 1,000th post!

  2. J-Hob December 13th, 2009 6:27 pm

Congrats on the 1000th post! And you get my vote for keepin the ebook title as it is.

A redesign is definitely a good idea, it’s not that I think the current site is bad, it’s just grown a lot, and very organically and when that happens you need to give it a bit of a scrub every now again again. Happy to advise on wordpress/usability elements but wouldn’t realistically have the time to do the whole site and I’m not much cop with graphics. I’d advise getting someone who specialises in wordpress sites though as that should save you a whole load of faff.

You should definitely do the road trip! Monday Ukearist would welcome you with open arms and I could offer a bed for a night or two.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – keep up the great work – this site is a constant inspiration, cheers!

  3. sam December 13th, 2009 6:37 pm

    congratulations on the 1000th post!
and thank you for everything you do here, it’s much appreciated. (i am one of those people who don’t take 30 seconds to say thanks, and now i feel bad about that. so i’m sorry. and thank you, again.)

  4. Josh December 13th, 2009 6:50 pm

Wow I’m quite excited about the classical e-book. My family seem to enjoy those famous classical tunes more as they actually recognise them.

And i would really support tutorial videos, maybe one on some Roy Smeck tricks haha.

  5. Ukulele Bartt December 13th, 2009 6:59 pm

1,000 posts! Way to go, Al! One post for every year that AC/DC has been together. The closest corresponding Fibonacci numbers are 377 and 610, which is obviously cause for more celebration.
If your road trip takes you as far afield as the western USA, I’ve got a car, a camera and editing skills, but you’ll have to go elsewhere for the interpersonal skills.
    But seriously, folks, Congratulations!

  6. Ken Middleton December 13th, 2009 7:20 pm

Whatever you choose to do is OK by me, Al. Big congrats and many, many thanks.

  7. milko December 13th, 2009 7:23 pm

I’d be up for a members bit.

And, I may be one of the people who suggested the video, but in my defence it was along the lines of ‘in partnership with someone who likes being in videos’ so it could combine with the road trip perhaps!

  8. Jen December 13th, 2009 7:23 pm

Congratulations on your 1000th post. I shall raise a glass of yummy alcopop in tribute!

  9. Byjimini December 13th, 2009 7:46 pm

    Well done Al. :)

  10. Hello Jodi December 13th, 2009 7:48 pm

“I wouldn’t want it to be a ‘the more the merrier, everyone’s welcome’ thing. Because it isn’t and they’re not.”

This is why you are the only ukulele “thing” I read any more. Lost interest in Cosmos, FMMB, UU, ukulelia, whatever-the-hell-else. But I still read you. I love the way you write, your contemptuous but non-judgmental tone, your ability to find the more interesting ukulele tidbits, et cetera. Mazel tov on 1,000 posts! I’ll be around for 1,000 more, that’s for sure.

  11. Armelle December 13th, 2009 7:50 pm

Congrats on your 1000th post, Al. That’s quite an achievement !!!

I don’t know if the “(and further afield”) would include France but you know you are welcome here anytime.

Looks like there will be plenty to look forward to in 2010, new ebooks, a forum ! Wow !

Many thanks for all your great work !

  12. CharlesHugh December 13th, 2009 7:50 pm

Definitely not fewer, if there are I might actually get round to doing some work. I think a private section sounds cool, but the idea of paying for it doesn’t. And I think the site looks fine.
    Congrats on the 1000th post!

  13. Byjimini December 13th, 2009 7:52 pm

Not too sure on the whole forum thing, I like the way the site works as it is. There’s plenty of forums around for the uke, most of which are filled with the typical “what chords does this song is on da uke” drivel.

  14. biggreenkeith December 13th, 2009 7:55 pm

Thanks Woodshed for the always funny and intelligent site . I’ve probably learnt more about the ukulele from you than from anyone else. You also introduced me to loads of artists who I wouldn’t have discovered otherwise, kudos to your UkeRadar

  15. David December 13th, 2009 8:06 pm

Congratulations, I’m sure the next 1000 will be just as enjoyable.. looking forward to learning to shred the fuck out of my uke!

  16. Jeff December 13th, 2009 8:38 pm

Congratulations and thanks a bunch you cunt, I mean Uke Hunt.

  17. Donnie Bubbles December 13th, 2009 8:45 pm

    All great ideas!

  18. Another Al December 13th, 2009 8:53 pm

Congrats, and many thanks for all the great work you’ve done! This site’s been a constant source of inspiration and entertainment for me since I took up uke. Looking forward to the next thousand posts :)

  19. Aurora F. December 13th, 2009 10:02 pm

Thanks Al. I’ve been playing uke for less than a year, and so far almost everything I know I’ve learned from you. You’re the best. Keep it up.

(Now that I’ve said thanks, I reserve the right to ask for things in the future, if I can think of something to ask for.)

  20. mictoboy December 13th, 2009 10:42 pm

Congrats on the milestone! Keep it up, keep it as is. It’s your baby, do what makes you happy. I’ll still be reading whatever :)

  21. Jimmy December 13th, 2009 10:44 pm

Congradulations on the 1000th post, and I think you alone are far more charming than Ukulele-Tabs.com
Cheers for all the tabs and showing the many ways in which the ukulele is cool.
I like the Shredding book name :)

  22. zym December 13th, 2009 11:00 pm

cor 1000 post!!! – well done that man!! :D

a UKhunt safari would be ace – Must be a radio 4 documentary in there somewhere!! You ought to do it john shuttleworth style and only travel on the bus (with a make-believe manager)

Not sure what i would suggest re a site design, but I’ve always thought that the categories/organisation of the site could do with some work, but then again i think thats the case with lots of website. I still think of ukehunt as being a ‘blog’ but maybe it isnt really that anymore? You need a site to reflect your ‘Self-facilitating ukulele node’ status ;)

Oh, and stay away from running a forum, it will destroy what shred of faith in humanity you still have.

  23. Dan December 13th, 2009 11:24 pm

    Happy thousandth post!

How about a “road trip” to the USA?

  24. Ron Hale December 13th, 2009 11:25 pm

Top marks all around and thanks, from one non-driver with no interpersonal skills to another. [30 seconds]

Perhaps, along with the video of the year contest, you could run
polls in other categories, i.e., uke player(s) of the year, uke song of the year, uke album of the year, uke event of the year, ukulele of the year, luthier of the year, trend of the year, etc., and, of course, the worst of various categories, too. The first annual Ukulele Hunt Awards, or something along that line. Might increase traffic to the site.

  25. Jam December 13th, 2009 11:30 pm

I’d just like to say cheers Al, you’ve taught me loads that I’d otherwise be olivous about. You helped me choose my first ukulele with your reviews. It’s a pleasure to find another set of chords or tabs for a song every few days – nice one :D
What ever improvement you make or changes I’m sure will be the right ones xD

A side note- there’s already quite a few uke forums. The comments system works quite well here as the topic is always firmly set. Maybe a ukehunt forum would be a waste of time.

  26. Acilius December 13th, 2009 11:52 pm

Congratulations! You’ve done a marvelous job and all of us owe you great thanks.

Add me to the list of those who are leery of the idea of another forum. If anyone could make a forum work better than the ones that are already up do, it would be you. But why would you want to take that task on when there are so many other things you can do and are doing?

  27. jamin9306 December 14th, 2009 12:58 am

“How to Shread the F**k out of a Ukulele” absolutely brilliant. A new look would also be nice to spruce things up (after visiting here 4 or 5 times a day for the past year or so it gets a little old). I also could not agree more on the privet forum i know i would gladly pay a little to view it.

Congrats and keep up the outstanding work you do have a truly great full and loyal fan base.

  28. Tamster December 14th, 2009 3:16 am

Congratulations on your 1000th post. You have lots of great info, tabs and links here.
As for a forum, there are too many arguments on the ones that already exist. Why would you want the headaches?
Love the name of the solo book.
How about some other method of payment other than paypal for the ebooks? (or maybe I should just sign up for a paypal account, eh?).

  29. vatsal December 14th, 2009 5:11 am

Congrats! Nowhere else can I find the quality that I can find here, so thank you! I private member area would be a hit I think, and would be very useful to those who are willing/worthy to join. A site redesign would be nice as many have said, but its really not one of those glaring issues with the site, it already looks very clean. I would definitely be one to watch your tutorial videos as well!

Congrats again, heres to 1,000 more!

  30. J December 14th, 2009 8:06 am

Congratulations on the 1000th post. I guess I’m guilty of being one of those who pilfer and never commented, mostly cuz I know I tend to ramble and don’t add to the convo much, I should have at least shown my appreciation after all this time. But either way…

    Thanks :)

But really though. Thanks a LOT. I’ve had hours and hours and hours of fun attempting tabbed songs (I got bored of playing just chords but tabs are too hard for me still). From someone who was on and off dropping by over the past few months, I agree with some of the other people and you on the forum thing… I think it’s good the way it is without one. Maybe site navigation would be easier with more trimmed down main menu categories? Even after all this time, sometimes I get confused… it’s kind of fun too though haha.

Again congrats. Thank you in advance for all the future countless hours of fun I’ll have on my uke. I’ll promise to pipe up a bit more after all my pillaging haha.

  31. S.U.S December 14th, 2009 8:19 am

Everyone who buys a uke from us and wants to know where to go on the web, always get pointed your way. If next year you start road trips, we are 300 yards from the train station and the kettles on.
    Cheers Paul.

  32. Mcnilly December 14th, 2009 9:40 am

Well done on 1000th posts (even though i havent been a round that long to appreciate all of them!)
Again, as with most of the other people i support the ebook title and will happily purchase it!

  33. Phredd December 14th, 2009 11:32 am

    Al,

Congratulations on reaching Roman Numeral M. Thank you for what you do to proliferate the joy of ukulele playing. I read your posts everyday. I share it with friends. I repost it on FB and Twitter, sometimes I even talk about it on the radio. Thank you Al for your love, care and hard work (and of course your sense of humor).

As far as changing the look, I really like the look you have now. It’s clean and easy to follow. But that’s just my two cents.

Thanks again Al. You are loved and appreciated!

    Phredd

  34. melissa December 14th, 2009 11:44 am

THANK YOU!!! There, got that outta the way. Now to business: I like the format of your current site, but it’s your site, so change it if you want. No fewer posts, please. Another tutorial is always appreciated, no matter what the f*ck you call it. A private, members only site will only work for me if I get to be a member; otherwise, please don’t be an elitist bastard! And finally, please include a trip to the US. Never mind the interpersonal skills, some of us don’t know which fork to use.
    THANK YOU!!!

  35. Carl December 14th, 2009 12:14 pm

Great work! I visit your site daily and learned an awful lot.

Please off a clean title for your ebook (I’ve got young kids in the house). I will even settle for redacted version such as “How to Shred xxx xxxx xxx xxx a Ukulele”.

  36. Olly December 14th, 2009 12:19 pm

    Happy 1000th Post!

How to shread the fuck out of a Ukulele sounds good to me, but cencorship might be a good idea – how about releasing the same book twice under two names?

If your in East Kent, give me a shout and I’ll buy you a beer

    :o)

  37. cardboardfrog December 14th, 2009 12:20 pm

epic, congrats on 1000 posts and thanks for all the fish,
the uke tour sounds awesome, be sure to stop by liverpool or nottingham so we can jam!

  38. Art Crocker December 14th, 2009 1:21 pm

Al, Congrats from Melbourne, Florida. Have been with you since you started your site, which was about the time I started the uke. Your site has always been very informative and entertaining. I am sure that a little change in the site may be a good thing, new life etc. But beware of losing your current unique site personality. Forums are good, however there are many out there, and I think they often bog down in the same questions or topics.

I cast a vote for not changing things too much,

Thanks for doing a great job,
    Art

  39. LonnaB December 14th, 2009 1:49 pm

1,000! Doing anything 1,000 times is impressive! Congrats to you. And thank you, as well.

I won’t buy the new e-book with any other name, so if you do decide to change it mine will have to have a custom title.

You shouldn’t feel required to offer a forum, either open to the public or for members only. Too many people think they have something to say. I think the website offers enough as it is. Though, I’m not saying I wouldn’t use a forum to say the things I think I have to say :)

  40. alec December 14th, 2009 1:58 pm

This is the first site I check everyday, and the only ukulele site I bother with anymore. Thank you!

Fewer posts? Are you kidding? More posts!!

You should call it How to Shred Ukulele Like a Motherfucking Gangster.

Tutorial videos for sure. You don’t even have to talk, I think tutorials would be easy to make if you played it once regular/fast, then a second time very very slow and close up. Then anyone who really wanted to could follow along and figure it out.

Thanks for the inspiration, and for Music From a Found Harmonium (that could have been a lot slower; I turned it into a audio file and slowed it down with some midi program) which is now my favorite song to play.

  41. Paul December 14th, 2009 2:20 pm

Keep up the great work, your site is a constant source of inspiration. I’d still like to see chords for non-uke songs, for instance where the currently available interpretations are pants, which is frequently the case. I understand why you wish to steer clear of it, though.

Perhaps you could also feature a guide to the British sense of humour for anyone outside our shores baffled by your use of irony/sarcasm.

  42. Jeff / HumbleUker December 14th, 2009 2:48 pm

To me it seems you’ve been here sharing great stuff forever. You give us an almost daily dose of ukulele sustenance. Thank you Al for pushing the edges of ukulele playing far beyond my interests capabilities — it challenges me — your work is our play!

Thanks for hosting music on your site, like wwelti’s solo uke. Thanks for all of the tabs and chord arrangements too.

  43. Nick B-C. December 14th, 2009 3:23 pm

…WEHEY…1000 posts, good work man…As for less posts, Mmmm I check in every morning even though I know there won’t be a post anyway. less would have a bad effect on the average uke hunters mentality…

…The title of the soloing book must stay and it should really be accompanied by a photo of you in fancy dress, burning a freshly shreded uke with zippo fuel, alla Jimmy Hendricks…

…A shit, shave, shower and shoe shine for the site would be cool…not sure about a forum though, they tend to bring out the pernickety in people, it kind flows as it is. I think most pople come here cos it’s an inspirational site, that is open and friendly. If there was a members only area that would be lost…

…Cheers Al and here’s to another 1000 posts!!!

…if the road trip passes York shout me out!!!…

  44. Woodshed December 14th, 2009 3:52 pm

Oh crap, this is a lot of comments to reply to…

Emily: I don’t think anyone would dare disagree after that threat.

John: I’ll definitely be hiring a pro. And I may well be tapping your brain for suggestions.

    sam: Thanks for the thanks.

Josh: Classical music is always good for impressing the old folks.

Bartt: I’ll break out the Fibonacci fireworks.

    Ken: Thanks!

milko: I’m not very good at partnerships either.

    Jen: *clink*

    Byjimini: Cheers!

Jodi: Thanks very much for the kind words.

Armelle: I’m sure France will be the first foreign stop off.

CharlesHugh: I wouldn’t want you to do any work.

biggreenkeith: Always happy to spread the word about talented musicians.

David and Another Al: 1000 more? 1000 seems like a lot more looking forward than it seems looking back.

    Jeff: Thanks. I think ;)

    Donnie: Thanks.

Aurora: You have official dispensation to make a request.

    mictoboy: Will do.

    Jimmy: You’re welcome.

zym: I’ll bust out my Bontempi keyboard.

Dan: That really would be a trip.

Ron: Good idea. Might be a bit of a pain in the arse to organise.

    … more comments later.

  45. todd December 14th, 2009 5:38 pm

    Well how bout that?

many many thanks Al and congratulations….i think i initially stumbled onto this site via howlin hobbit’s blog….and i’m glad i did….

I’ve gleaned a bunch of goodness from this site, i’ve laughed my arse off many-a time (with regard to your commentary and sense of humor), and i’ve been turned onto a bunch of great uke music and as a result have subbed and been subbed by some nice folks out there in YT land…..

all the best from your southwestern uke friend,

    todd

  46. Woodshed December 14th, 2009 5:55 pm

Jam: The thing with comments is that you don’t get as much interaction between people as you do on a forum.

    Acilius: I think you’re right.

jamin9306: You visit more than I do!

Tamster: You can pay by credit card through PayPal. But I’ll look into it.

    vatsal: Thanks for the feedback.

J: I agree with you about the site navigation – it could definitely be improved.

SUS: Thanks very much for spreading the word. I really appreciate it.

    Mcnilly: Thanks!

Phredd: Thanks very much for the exposure.

    melissa: Thanks for the tips.

Carl and Olly: Good idea. I might have to do that.

cbf: Nottingham would definitely be an easy one.

Art: Thanks for the vote. Looks like I’ll be going that way.

    LonnaB: Hey! Shut it!

alec: Thanks for the suggestions. Slowed down demonstrations is a really good one.

Paul: I think that’s a good idea. It would mean I get in less trouble with Americans.

Jeff: Thanks very much for the kind words.

  47. Woodshed December 14th, 2009 6:01 pm

Nick: I definitely draw the line at fancy dress. Thanks for all you comments along the way.

todd: Thanks very much for all you comments and shout-outs.

  48. Jim D'Ville December 14th, 2009 6:03 pm

Great job, 1,000 times over! I know how much work it is to keep it fresh. Hope to see you in the USA in 2010!

  49. tamster December 14th, 2009 6:19 pm

No with Paypal you have to sign up for an account first. When you used Clickbank I could just pay with a credit card without an account, but you told me there was something about the cost with them so you went to Paypal.

  50. Bob Schneider December 14th, 2009 10:09 pm

I just want to add my congrats to those of all the many others who appreciate all your efforts.
Hang in there and keep it up…

  51. frances December 15th, 2009 12:26 am

I love this site the way it is, which is the way i found it, and the way it continues to be, for ever and ever, I should hope.

    Just don’t break nothing.

Seriously, this has been one easy to navigate site. I look forward to my morning songs by email, and take lessons from your books beside my ukulele chair.

One thing that works is that the site allows ease of posting by you, so that things are in real time. A rich rich resource, and I sure do have a lot of bookmarks going to places here.

  52. drywell December 15th, 2009 2:14 am

Well on your way to a 1000 congratulations and thank yous, much deserved. For the future, please just keep doing what you do, which appears to be staying true to what inspires you with a forthright voice and a generous spirit. I’m just finishing my first year in uke-world, and can easily credit 99% of what I know to this site.

  53. Rob NY December 15th, 2009 4:19 am

Congratulations Al! Happy to be part of the 12 million visits.Look foward to many more. Please Al,no fewer post. I do believe you would do a video tutorial very well. Thanks for all you do.

  54. Clare December 15th, 2009 5:04 am

Only 1000 (and 2)? Top drawer!

Finding this little uke community has made 2009 a special one for me. Thank you Al for all you do. This is the only place to get decent uke info in a truly uke spirit, uke hunt!

    Aloha! and other festive salutations

PS fewer posts? We say No!

  55. jeff December 15th, 2009 5:59 am

Al, I bought “How to Play Ukulele Strums” because it was the only way I could say thank you for this wonderful thing you have given to the world. Loved the book! I would be proud to be a paid member. Especially because the popularity of that 3-year-old playing “I’m Yours” means 1,000,026 people are going to want to start playing the uke because HE can. I’ll pay to be one of the few, the happy few, the band of brothers, for he who plays the uke with me this day shall be my brother!!! Sorry…carried away as usual.

  56. Anne Marie December 16th, 2009 4:38 am

Congratulations and thank you thank you thank you for one thousand posts!

  57. Cat Green Bike December 16th, 2009 9:51 am

    Al,

Bloody fine work Sir, you deserve a trophy. When you come to Bristol on your UK travels I shall present you with said trophy, albeit in the form of a cake.

All your resolutions are sound, especially a ‘members only’ forum. That would make me feel special, until I found out I wasn’t invited.

I can not fully express the admiration I have for your dedication to this most excellent site, but I hope that it continues for as long as you can be arsed to do so.

I am here to assist you in any way I can. I hope you have a delightful, or at least bearable, Christmas.

    Xen x

  58. Woodshed December 16th, 2009 10:07 pm

    Jim: Thanks very much.

Tamster: There is definitely an option on the PayPal page to use your credit card (they don’t make it obvious and I think they don’t let you use it after spending a certain amount).

    Bob: Thanks.

Clare: Really glad you’ve enjoyed it.

jeff: But they’ll all want to learn I’m Yours. Uck.

    Anne: A thousand ‘you’re welcome’s.

Xen: Cakes > trophies any day.

  59. Howlin' Hobbit December 20th, 2009 2:08 am

    Congrats on the millennial post!

    Lessee…
I see no reason to host a forum.
Feel free to change the look or not.
I’m not much the shredder type but don’t bowdlerize your book title for anybody.
Post as many or few as you like. I’ll read ’em all.

I probably missed something in that list but I’m just like that.

Thanks for the great uke stuff and keep it coming!

Eek, I meant to comment sooner but December was kinda hectic. Anyway, this site is amazing. I got my first uke for Xmas 08 & found this site soon after – now my life would not be the same without it! Thank you for all that you do & for bringing this uke community together. I hope the uke tour takes in Manchester & if you’re looking a for a great camera that’s easy to use, I recommend the Flip Cam: http://tinyurl.com/y95lggl

Oh & for the record, fewer posts = very bad.

Bossa: If I do decide to it, Manchaster will certainly be on the list. I have a Flip (although it’s not the HD). If I was doing it seriously I might invest in something that you can plug a mic into.

Woodshed: Ah, I’d not really thought of that. I’m fairly new to this videoing lark – only just starting to explore video in my current job where the flips are perfect & easy to use. Thanks, you’ve probably just saved me some money.
