Before I start, a quick update on the Sebi situation. After having his channel suspended for covering a song owned by WMG, he’s set up a new one with two videos sharing his love for Warners.

I’ve already covered most of the best ukulele albums from 2009 (like Sophie Madeleine‘s Life. Love. Ukulele. and L’appropriation Bourgoisie de la Bobby McGee’s), but I’ve almost completely ignored BiRd-BrAiNs by tUnE-YaRdS (perhaps because it’s such a pain in the arse to write the name). A horrendous oversight since it was one of the most exciting and interesting albums of the year.

As with all things tUnE-YaRdS, her ukulele tuning is somewhat unusual. As revealed in her interview with UkeToob, she plays a tenor ukulele but tunes it baritone style dGBE (with a high-D string). That means you can play it as written on a standard ukulele but it will be five frets higher.

    Hope you enjoyed your break, good to see ukehunt back!
    My favourite track of hers is synonynonym (http://www.last.fm/music/Tune-Yards/BiRd-BrAiNs/Synonynonym+%28Digital+Only+Bonus+Track%29) I’ll have to try tackling a tab now that I know what tuning she uses…

    I was just going to suggest this idea today, but Sebi beat me to it. This is
    exactly what Dave Carroll did last year when United Air Lines damaged his
    Taylor guitar and then refused his claim for damages. His video,
    United Breaks Guitars has 7.5 million views and his United Breaks
    Guitars Song 2 has 800,000 views. Not to mention all the other
    videos which sprang up ridiculing the fools at United (my favorite is Hitler Finds Out United Breaks Guitars, but some may be put off by the premise). There’s even a Northwest Breaks Dulcimers video. I’m sending
    these two videos to my friends and explaining the situation to
    them, and asking them to do the same for others. Other ukers should do the same. I mentioned the situation to a local bands blog, not that it’s a local band issue, but the word has to get out.

    And other ukers should join Sebi and put up their own videos attacking Warners which we can then send to others. Ukers can perform songs in concert ridiculing WMG, put them on-line for download. Bloggers can post Sebi’s videos and explain what happened to him.
    This can take off as people, not just ukers, are sick and tired of
    this sort of corporate greed.

    Sebi rocks – what is wrong with these dinosaurs? I can’t count how many songs I bought because I saw a great cover version on YouTube and it made me love the original.

    Donnie: I can think of quite a few songs I’ve bought after hearing uke covers as well.
