Coronation Street Theme (Tab)

Coronation Street Theme (Tab)

I feel a bit guilty for all the UK-centric theme tunes I do. The only US shows I watch have doom laden intros (House, Heroes) or featureless backing for a voiceover (The Daily Show, Mythbusters). So if you have any suggestions for non-UK theme tunes that would work well on the uke, let me know.

Having said that, the Coronation Street theme tune doesn’t work too well on the uke. It’s a little too slow for the uke’s sustain. Which is why Ian Re-entrant’s funky version works well. But it’s a more faithful version that I’ve tabbed up.

i think you should do themes to TV soaps no longer with us
    Crossroads
    Brookside
    El Dorado

    or slighty more serious…
Kids TV shows (as this is becoming increasingly relevant to me)
The following have ukes in them, and in some cases Lenny Henry – and they are also on iplayer
    3rd and Bird
    Big and Small

    or (the proper serious response)
    Curb your Enthusiam

or, for our friends in the colonies (see point #1)
    Dallas
    Dynasty
    The Colbys
    Falcon Crest

    All right, welcome back!

The Mad Men opening credits theme has is pretty open and has a lot of potential, although it might not strike you as great the first time you hear it, it will later. It’s kinda doom laden too though. I declare it the best show on TV, though, and if you tab it they will come.

The Wire’s really good too, and each season they had a different person do the theme. Two of them were Tom Waits

    And Steve Earle:

All the versions were really different, so you could take maybe something from each one.

And may I humbly suggest skipping Heroes and House for Mad Men or the Wire? Mythbusters and the Daily Show, those I approve.

…Yeah Go on Al…My kids would go mental if Dad could belt out the theme…I’d be pretty chuffed too!…Big and small is one of the real pleasures of parenthood…every time the laptop comes out the instantly want this on..I don’t complain…

zym, Nick and cbf: Not what I had in mind when I asked for suggestions for US shows, but I’ll give Big and Small a go.

Alec: I did The Wire a while back.

Some US shows with themes I love:

    Magnum PI
    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
    Airwolf
just about any Mr. Rogers song

  10. Veronica February 2nd, 2010 5:14 pm

Bad Things by Jace Everett, featured on True Blood. It’s still dark, but wouldn’t it be fantastic?

  11. Ben February 2nd, 2010 8:10 pm

    Thought of some more:

    Bones
    X-men (90’s animated show)
    Get Smart

sorry for hijacking the post with my crazy UK/Australian co-productions ;)

  13. Woodshed February 3rd, 2010 12:52 pm

Ben: Thanks for the suggestions. Airwolf was one hell of a show.

Veronica: There’ve been a couple of excellent covers on uke already: The Baron and Luciar

Andy: No problem. Glad to know about it.

    hmmm
I like the sound of playing the House on the Uke… remember doom laden isn’t always a bad thing!
I used to love the x-men theme but probably not very uke friendly.

  16. Woodshed February 8th, 2010 12:08 pm

thehighlandcal: The problem with the House theme is there isn’t much of a melody to get hold of.
