Another ukulele hybrid: the sanlele. A cross between a uke and the sanshin a traditional instrument from Okinawa. Seems to be only available in Japan. You can listen to the sanlele here and some rocking sanshin here. I’ve never read a convincing justification for slotted headstocks. The best I’ve heard is that they reduce wind […]

I’m a big enough man to admit this. I was wrong and Noel Edmonds was right. Last week I cosmically ordered a Koaloha Sceptre. This week my dealer of choice put up a Sceptre for the first time. I shall never doubt the Edmonds again. He is my new Jesus. Summer NAMM 2010 was last […]
Unusually, it’s a rather unshowy and understated ukulele that’s got me interested. A Ken Timms Martin Style 0 copy. Looks great and sounds lovely too. On the more showy side is a Black Bear Lyon & Healy 5K Shrine copy. A couple of bobby-dazzler banjo ukuleles on eBay UK: Crown Ludwig, Gibson UB-2.
Mid-East‘s range of folk-instrument inspired ukuleles have shown up on eBay. Currently there are the Baroq-ulele, Balalaika ukulele and lute ukulele. No sign yet of the sitar-kulele which is slated for later this year. A couple of Sam Chang ukuleles up right now. Don’t see them very often. I’m all for using videos and soundfiles […]
Musicguymic has a bunch of Fleas with tenor necks. The proportions on those are going to take a bit of getting used to. Does anyone know anything about Double Island ukuleles? Other than them seeming to be Australian, the web turned up blank. Betty Page with uke (second photo), America’s Beverage of Moderation.
I find Weissenborn ukuleles very appealing. But $3,000? Always wanted to have “Kelly Boy De Lima” scrawled across your fretboard? Other than that, a rad looking uke. Charity auction for ukulele signed by Ingrid Michaelson. Photos: Handsome young man smoking, Baltimore beach gang.
A couple of interesting ukes from Mike Chock: mango and papaya. How do you feel about the increasing number of weird ukulele shapes? Every time I see one I squee a little but it quickly becomes a bit of a novelty. The guitar-shape of the ukulele is more an accident of history than anything but […]
I didn’t know much about Locals ukuleles but Noela Castro left a comment on the site with some info, “Aloha, I am the maker of Locals Ukuleles. I work out of home garage in Makakilo-Oahu, Hawaii. Just a little about myself and how I got started. I started back in 1996 with K.C. Moore of […]
Okay, which one of you bastards bought the tenor Sceptre when I was about to? New Fluke design: Kente Fluke. The Ashbury AU-34S seems suspiciously cheap. An all solid koa ukulele for £250? And it’s sold by the Southern Ukulele Store so I’d expect it to be legit. Pizza doesn’t have to be a pie […]
I went to Belper Uke Gathering last week. I wasn’t there long, but while I was I got a chance to try out Ohana’s new resonator ukuleles. They’re very nice ukes. Well made, top quality parts, sound great. I don’t understand why they did that. The problem is, they’re in the same price range as […]
