UkeTube: Best of 2009 So Far

September 12, 2009

Since I’ve been busy battling Mafia goons, shooting rabid dogs and swimming round Venice in hotpants I haven’t been keeping up with new videos, so I thought I’d knock together a post of my favourite uke videos of the year so far. Feel free to chime in with you faves and call me an asshat for not including them.

For the record, my favourite non-uke videos of the year so far are The Tallest Man on Earth in the Secret Garden, Emily Elbert’s Silent Time and Dead Weather’s Treat Me Like Your Mother [Read more]

Lindi Ortega, The Hoosiers, Susie Asado: Saturday UkeTube

September 5, 2009

Dolly Parton voice + awesome shades + describes herself as a loner = huge new uke crush.

Also this week: The Hoosiers use the uke to flog some Coke (or Pepsi, whichever), Japan’s two nuttiest ukers together, I kill Seeso’s chances in another contest and more. [Read more]

Lancashire Hotpots, Yan Yalego, Spoke Ensemble: Saturday UkeTube

August 29, 2009

This week’s selection includes the Lancashire Hotpots decrying the emoization of youth, some fantastic off-kilter blues from Yan Yalego, Agathe and her buddies also doing their bit for the Lancashire dialect by dropping a few haitches, the Spoke Ensemble making a rather wonderful noise, George Stone doing a rocking tribute to the Small Faces, Gracie Allen trying to get her flea right and plenty more. April Smith and Bess Rogers, Soul Covers: UkeTube Part 2

August 22, 2009

Part two of the UkeToob includes me giving the Uke Hunt kiss of death to four Shake Your Soul entries, Bess Rogers (who managed to drag herself away from the Boobie Bungalow for one night to join April Smith) and a couple of tributes to The Ramones. There’s also a version of First Day of My Life I picked up thanks to Donnie’s UkeTube replacement service. I have a number of instant rejections for consideration. And one of them is covering a blatantly obvious tune (which includes anything done by The Beatles, Jake or Julia Nunes). Which saves a huge amount of time but does mean I miss the occasional gem like this one. [Read more]

Steeleye Span and Peter Sellers, Victoria Vox: UkeTube Part 1

August 22, 2009

During the three week break there are too many videos for just one post. So I’ve split them into two parts and here’s the first.

The curiosity of the week is a track from Steeleye Span with ukulele contributions from Peter Sellers (you can see a picture of them all here). Also in this post are Bliss Blood, Victoria Vox and some incredibly adorable kittens. [Read more]

Kate Micucci, William H Macy, The Waifs: Saturday UkeTube

August 1, 2009

Looks like Hollywood has rediscovered the uke. Appearances this week from Kate Micucci and William H Macy (plugging their new film Bart Got A Room) and Adrian Grenier and Ari Gold come over all Pub Landlord (I know Iain’s going to love that link) with Amanda Palmer.

Also this week: I give Sebi the kiss of death by declaring him the obvious winner of the Go 90s contest (if you like his style, he’s done a post on how he does the fancy multiscreen video thing), The Waifs with – invisible as always – Josh Cunningham doing great work on the uke, Ken Middleton singing a song I have to stop before the end because the last line cuts me up too much, The Pyles is officially world’s sexiest uker and more videos than I usually let myself include. HoneyBody & the MoonBees, Argyle Smile: Saturday UkeTube

July 25, 2009

This week’s videos include Ingrid Michaelson covering Bon Iver, Argyle Smile playing with dominoes, Tinyfolk, a girl called Jose, Watercolor Paintings and some adorable ukulele puppets. But this week I’m particularly taken with Tristen and Emily Ritz’s HoneyBody and the Moonbees.

One video that didn’t make the cut is this clip of Tiny Tim freaking out a room full of kids. “The whole world is drowning A-ho-ho ho-ho.”

Btw, if all the videos don’t show up then refresh the page. They are all there somewhere. [Read more]

Kaki King, Will Grove-White: Saturday UkeTube

July 18, 2009

Stop the (Word)press: Todd has put up Ukulele Hunt jingle. No doubt I’ll be mentioning that a few times.

This week’s most interesting video is a loose ukulele jam from, guitar virtuoso, Kaki King. She does some incredible things with a guitar, so it’ll be interesting to see what she ends up doing with a uke. It’s also heartening to see that someone as dexterous as her can sometimes be completely cack-handed.

Also this week is Will Grove-White (of the UOGB), a couple of blinding covers from Sophie Madeleine, a bit of Django and some Ukuyeye. But my favourite this week has to be Daddy Stovepipe. How any ukulele girl could resist his charm? [Read more]

Cat Green Bike, Lulu & the Lampshades: Saturday UkeTube

July 11, 2009

Coastal towns beginning with ‘Bri’ seem to be uke hotspots at the moment. This week Brighton representative is Sophie Madeleine (she’s finally got her own YouTube channel). And Bristol is represented by Cat Green Bike (whose Breakbeat/Thrash/Concrete EP is rather fantastic) and Lulu and the Lampshades (this video, despite being uke-less, is a must-watch). And watching this video, it looks like Rocky and Balls might have been formed in Bristol.

I expect a Bridlington ukulele explosion any day now.

Also this week is a video of Humble Pie era Steve Marriott playing uke (and thanks to Grant for drawing my attention to it). “If I’m a foot, then you’re my sock.” How romantic. [Read more]

Madeline Ava, Francois Peglau: UkeTube

July 4, 2009

I might have gone a bit overboard with the Madeline Ava videos this week. But I couldn’t help it. She’s such an outstanding songwriter. And I had to celebrate the fact she has a new website where you can download her stuff.

Also this week is Francois Peglau, Ukulele Bartt ripping up some LuVaBe, Dominator jamming with Brittni, hand-farting and plenty more. [Read more]
