Izumi: UkeTube

It’s not often I feature two videos by the same person in one week, but I’ve made an exception for Izumi. I’ve moaned about the bland, easy listening nature of most modern Hawaiian music before, but I love the traditional stuff. The Hawaiian yodel is one of those love-it-or-hate-it sounds. Personally, I think it’s beautiful and Izumi’s voice is incredible.

I was going to include Bosko and Honey’s Seven Nation Army but embedding is outlawed. You’ve seen it already though, right?

Izumi – Ali’ipoe

Izumi – Lei Pua Kenikeni

Kate Sloan – Early Morning Moon

Wendy and Heather Mumford – Falling Slowly

yuz0suzuk2 – Pipeline

Cliff Edwards – For Me and My Girl

Saoff – Shallow Water

Mark Occhionero – September Song

John Kavanagh – Tubas in the Moonlight

waikiki613 – Bei Mir Bist Du Schon

GUGUG – Nadine (Is It You?)

Wow, Izumi gave me chills. But I love Western/Cowboy yodeling, and it’s really similar to this.

7 Nation Army is cool for words!

I want to BE Bosco. You can arrange that, right Woodshed?!

Izumi is amazing. I really love the yodeling sound. As a younger man I remember that Joni Mitchell used to do that kind of thing and my friends would cringe. Not me. It’s a cool sound.

Izumi is what, 8? She looks real young.

It says on her YT profile that she was 12 in 2006, so about 14 now (profile says junior high). In that year her debut CD “Voice of a little angel” came out, it appears.

Very lovely indeed, amazing actually that yodeling is so widespread. Cowboys, Tiroler maedchen, Hawaii, …

This weeks Uketube is especially cool. Thank you for a few new introductions. Ah and B&H totally rock in that video.

    Man,

great picks……I too enjoyed Izumi…..that style seems like it’d be even more effective within the context of a more conventional “sung” tune, but hey everyone’s got opinions eh?

looking forward to checking out Ike and the other tunes….

and so glad Gus’ Chuck Berry song made it!….classic

Jodi: You’re absolutely right. The Ho’opi’i Brothers did a track combining the two: Hawaiian Cowboy. You can listen to a clip of it here.

Paul: If I could, I’d be Bosco right now.

chris: I do like strange vocal effects. Throat singing is another incredible sound.

    H.: Thanks for the translation.

todd: If I could do that, I’d be doing it all the way through the songs as well.

Thanks for that link to The Ho’opi’i Brothers. I need to find more of this Hawaiian yodeling stuff: I really dig that long vibrato they use.
