Bushman World Ukulele Video Contest 2009: Friday Links

The Bushman World Ukulele Video Contest 2009 has kicked off. This year the winner will be decided by a vote – perhaps they’ve realised they have bloody awful taste.

The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra’s new EP The Dreaming is now available online.

I wish I could go to the Uketober Fest in Griffith Park LA. It features a bunch of Uke Hunt favourites: Kate Micucci, Madame Pamita and The UkuLady.

If you’re anywhere near Sydney sign up for the Sydney Ukulele ‘n’ Beer Meetup.

Shelley ‘UkeBox’ Rickey has some ukulele themed desktops available to download.

Armelle comes up trumps with some great creole songs on ukulele.

Ukulele Hero: Warren Buffett edition.

Charles Dance loves playing the ukulele.

Gosh Damn! has some, “ukulele laden house music,” for download.

My favouite uke photo this week comes curtousy of ukulele.fr: Edouard Jacovacci.

Oh, I wish I lived in Sydney.

“You will arrive as a beginner, and you will leave drunk.”

Sounds like my kind of party.

It will be interesting to see what kind of entries Bushman gets this year. I’ve heard rumors of a boycott.

Wouldn’t mind a trip to Sydney either, ukulele players seem like a friendly bunch with a sense of humour :
“We will practice, then perform that song, then congratulate each other out of all proportion to the actual greatness of the performance.”

Many thanks for the mention of my creole ukulele post.

Lonna: Yeah, I saw that thread. They’ve shut it down because you’re not allowed to talk about non-UU contests. Funny stuff!

    Armelle: You’re welcome.

    Whoa! That’s classic.

Hey, Woodshed, just to be clear, do you have any rules about comments left on the blog?

Have you ever removed someone’s post for being vulgar or inflammatory?

    Just curious ;)

Lonna: Did I use the words, “vulgar and inflammatory”? Because that sounds like most of what I write. *Goes to look at comment policy*

“Abusive comments”. Yeah, I’ve had plenty of those. And not just individual comments. There are a couple of people who go directly to spam because I’ve got sick of them.

I don’t have any clear rules. The closest is, “Any comment I want to delete will be deleted.” Which varies from day-to-day.

Oh no, you didn’t use those words, I did- a not so quiet reference to how things are handled on other sites. Not that I personally have ever been in trouble for anything like that. Well, not since college anyway.

Your sandbox, your rules. Makes a lot of sense to me.

Lonna: That’s okay then. I wouldn’t want to discourage vulgarity or inflammatory discussion.

I think the BUSHMAN thingy should be boycotted because they inflicted Julia Nunes on the world…AAAHHHHHH!!

  9. Woodshed October 5th, 2009 11:50 am

Jimmy: Yeah, there is that. But atleast they didn’t let Wade Johnston win it (which I was expecting them to do).

  10. Thomas October 5th, 2009 4:27 pm

Usually though, if contests are decided by popular vote, the best doesn’t necessarily win. (European song contest, anyone? (Actually, not such a great example. About 99% of that sucks regardless)).

  11. Woodshed October 6th, 2009 8:58 am

Thomas: But it does stop everyone having a go at Bushman over who wins.

  12. Ashley October 7th, 2009 11:14 am

Are you going to be in the contest this year? I saw all the stuff on UU and now I am not sure whether I want to participate or not…

  13. Woodshed October 7th, 2009 11:55 am

Ashley: No, I won’t be entering. Not for the reasons discussed on UU, though. I say if you’d have fun entering go for it.
