Half Man Half Biscuit – It’s Cliched to be Cynical at Christmas (Chords)

Half Man Half Biscuit – It’s Cliched to be Cynical at Christmas (Chords)

My Christmas present to myself is to finally put some Half Man Half Biscuit on the blog.

I was going to evangelize about HMHB, but they’re really a band you either love or don’t understand at all. Listen to Joy Division Oven Gloves and Bob Wilson, Anchorman. If you don’t get it, move along.

New to me. By your into, Al, I was expecting something truly outre that would polarize people, but what I heard was (for me, anyway) pretty straight -forward stuff, and very nice. And not only is it cliched
to be cynical at Christmas, it’s become tiresomely tiresome. Humor, especially in an off-beat way is always welcome, but it’s way past time to put the cynicism & irony behind and just savor the season.

I’ll have four scotch eggs and a motoring atlas.

…Once I started pondering what the remaining 1% of gargoyles look like…Right where did I put that equilateral chainsaw?…

…Yet again Woodshed comes up trumps…

Great band….learned a lot from them (by “Learned” I mean stole!)
“We’re just like other bands, but different”

I’ve been thrown out one of their gigs….long story!

I also HAVE a pair of Joy Division Oven Gloves, becca made them for my birthday!

I get it. Would have still like to hear you evangelize.

  8. rico December 18th, 2009 4:45 pm

please go ahead and evangelize. This is my fave post since The Fall ones.
    Thanks Al, Merry Xmas.

(and if you feel like doing a Half-Man, Half Biscuit uke book, I’m first in line:)

todd: They don’t make it over to the US very often (or ever).

Craig, Ron and Rob: I’m a little amazed that anyone outside the UK would like HMHB, I’ve always considered them to be very parochial.

sarah and Nick: Don’t start me quoting HMHB lyrics, we’ll be here all day.

Jimmy: Is there anything that girl can’t do?

Rico: No book but I did tab out a bunch of them on Ultimate Guitar.

I get it. This made me smile. Thank you.

Hi Woodshed, i’ve been a fan of your tidy site for a long time – very happy to see some HMHB, nice one! I reckon Joy Division Oven Gloves is a nice beginner tune on the uke.
    Festive wishes

    Yes! HMHB!

I’ve been doing a (shambolic, drunken) video series of HMHB covers for the last few weeks. Latest is on the tenor uke – If I Had Possession Over Pancake Day

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRTBNmG1xjY

It’s in G, C and D, obviously enough, as is a hell of a lot of HMHB stuff.

  13. Woodshed December 30th, 2009 11:26 am

    Tom: You’re welcome.

Lady T: I reckon so. I wrote up the chords to it here.

    Jason: Nice one!

Well, finding this made my day!! Combining HMHB and the ukulele: where could you possibly go wrong? Performed a uke version of ‘Restless Legs’ this summer, which was a lot of fun! And I like the mantra ‘if you don’t get it, move along’.

  15. Jess November 27th, 2011 6:43 pm

P.S. I know I’m two years late, but never mind!

  16. Woodshed November 28th, 2011 5:51 pm

Jess: I’m happy to make your day even if it two years later.

  17. John December 9th, 2011 6:50 pm

I supported HMHB about 10 years ago in my old band, I was so chuffed, one of my favourite bands. This is going to be my CHristmas song this year :0)

  18. Woodshed December 10th, 2011 1:35 pm

John: That’s quite some claim to fame!

The golden rule of the internet “don’t read the comments” has seriously bitten me on the bum, as I’ve visited this page many times and only now seen your link to “Ultimate Guitar”.

The true tragedy of this is I’m at work and will have to wait at least 8 hours before I can get cracking (my work uke mysteriously went missing in the office move a week ago)

  20. Woodshed November 21st, 2013 8:49 am

    AlNapp: Hope work goes quickly!

  21. Jess October 15th, 2014 5:31 am

I had never heard this before. It’s amazeballs. Will inflict it on the fam at Christmas, they won’t know what hit em. (Hint: it’ll be the extra strong eggnog.)

  22. Woodshed October 15th, 2014 9:13 am

Jess: Glad you enjoyed it. And Merry Christmas!
