Eddie Vedder – Longing to Belong (Chords)

Eddie Vedder – Longing to Belong (Chords)

More details coming out about Eddie Vedder’s ukulele album. The latest is that it’s going to be called Ukulele Songs and will be out on the 30th May. It’ll feature a duet with Glen Hansard and a version of Tonight You Belong to Me with Cat Power. And songs will include Goodbye, Can’t Keep and the first single from it: Longing to Belong.

Don’t be surprised if I end up tabbing them all. Pearl Jam were 1/3 of the reason I got into music as a kid.

Suggested Strumming

The main strum is all downs. But you don’t hit every string, every strum. You start by hitting E and A, then g and C twice. Repeat that. Then EA once and gC once.

Later in the song he adds a d-u-d-u to it.

Twiddly Bits

This time around I’m experimenting with including the twiddly bits in the pdf.

First main twiddly bit is the solo. It’s not too tricky and you can follow the chord shapes (if your eyesight is good) or the tab. Feel free to vary it up. He does.

:-) It’s fun to think back to reasons for getting into music as a youngster. And the other 2/3 for yourself…. just out of curiosity?

I’m looking forward to hearing the full album when it comes out. I think it’s going to be good. It would be great if you tabbed all of them ;)

    Thanks Al,

Didn’t know it would be up so quickly!

Hope the rest of the album lives up to this one.

Yeah Al, what were the other 2/3? Nirvana and Pearl Jam got me started when I was about 14 and later on Oasis before Mogwai came along and invaded my head.

    PS the link has expired.

Eddie’s one of the main reasons I got interested in ukulele. Soon Forget blew my mind back when that first came out. Then I heard Iz and Jake and I knew I had to check this tiny instrument out.

I would not be disappointed if you tabbed out his entire album.

Video seems to have been taken down. This link does seem to be working at the moment though.

I’m very interested to see what the full Uke album will be long, good so far!

That’s really nice to play. Harder to pull off the voice I feel… Looking forward to this album now!

    jsn: Nirvana and Metallica.

Jet86: Yeah, I’m looking forward to it. Particularly the Cat Power collab.

    Alan: You’re welcome.

Kempo: Yep, Nirvana were another third (along with Metallica). We must be the same age because my trajectory was exactly the same. I had a huge Mogwai/post-rock phase in my university days.

Nateekins: Good, because there’s a good chance I’ll be tabbing much of it.

Foinnse: Thanks. I had to change the video in the post before it went up because that one got nuked. I might wait and hope an official version gets put up.

Ambient: It is fun to play – particularly the solo. I don’t ever attempt singing.

    Thanks!

Longing To Belong: I wonder if that’s what Pearl Jam fans are feeling when they heard that Eddie Vedder’s on tour but tickets cost between $150-162 per pair plus venue and handling fees! Remember when PJ’s complaints about Ticketmaster led the U.S. Department of Justice to open an antitrust investigation into the company’s practices? Guess that was the Nineties.

  11. Woodshed March 31st, 2011 2:22 pm

    Rob: You’re welcome.

Robo: $150? Jesus! There is no way I’d go for that amount.

Eddie Vedder is 100% of the reason I took up my first instrument. The song Rise alone convinced me to pick up the mandolin.

  13. Woodshed April 1st, 2011 8:49 am

Oscar: I can certainly believe that. Rise is a fantastic song.

  14. Eman April 9th, 2011 6:46 pm

looking forward to vedders new album.

How about making a tab for You`re true ? :)

  15. Woodshed April 10th, 2011 8:38 am

Eman: I’m sure I’ll be tabbing something off the album once it comes out. Might be that one.

  16. Eman April 10th, 2011 10:42 am

    great!

  17. Seth April 11th, 2011 11:23 pm

Thanks for tabbing and sharing! Looking forward to Eddie’s uke album and learning this song in the meantime should be fun.

  18. Woodshed April 12th, 2011 7:19 am

    Eman: Thanks.

    Seth: Have fun with it.

Tony: It’s up here Can’t Keep.

This site has taught me so much in such a short space of time – awesome stuff.

If you ever find the time to TAB the rest of Ukulele Songs I will be eternally grateful!

I have been teaching myself to play Uke on the kids’ cheap ukes since getting Vedder’s new album – it even sounds great on them so I will be in seventh heaven when I finally get my new tenor uke!

  30. Woodshed July 23rd, 2011 1:08 pm

VedderMad: Sorry, with there being a book of it I won’t be doing any more.

  31. Alex December 6th, 2011 10:48 pm

I’m really digging this music by Eddie Vedder! Any chance you can post “Hard Sun” chords up? :D Cheers!

  32. Sandra January 17th, 2012 10:01 pm

Just discovered Eddie Vedder thanks to this site – thank you!

Wee query re the how to strum – after playing the ea strings with a down strum is it a down strum again for the following two gc string strums ….all with forefinger or should I be alternating finger and thumb? Or do I just need to put in the practice to get faster?? think I know the answer…Thanks though, learning loads and enjoying even more.

  33. Woodshed January 18th, 2012 6:58 am

Sandra: I do it all with my finger. I think Eddie is using a pick on this one.

  34. Sandra January 18th, 2012 9:49 pm

Thanks, will give this a try. Great to get the tab insert too on the chord sheet, thanks!

  35. paulmoody February 1st, 2012 3:24 pm

Thank u So much!! Eddie is one, and may be the most artist i love, thank u again Woodshed. I know that my next question is not about Eddie, but I don’t know where to post it, but somebody knos the chords for Granny by Vic Chesnutt, it’s impossible to find anywhere, and i feel is not too complicated but i’m not able to do it by myself, yet. Thank you!!

  39. Woodshed November 22nd, 2012 1:14 pm

Artiga: I think the main part is Dm – Bb – C.

    Then the outro is F – C – Bb – C.

  40. Katie June 29th, 2013 5:18 pm

Thanks for tabbing this out, this is my favourite ukulele song ever. I was playing it with a completely different strum pattern before I read yours – with yours do you start with the E and A string just the once or twice?

I’m also struggling with the pattern for the instrumental :(

  41. Katie June 29th, 2013 5:27 pm

Ahhh… I gotcha on the strum now, sorry. Just gotta work on the instrumental now. Thanks again

  42. Woodshed June 30th, 2013 8:25 am

Katie: Glad you got the hang of it. Good luck with the instrumental bit.

  43. Yellowfish May 3rd, 2014 1:40 pm

    Great song, thanks !

  44. Woodshed May 4th, 2014 10:23 am

    Yellowfish: Glad you like it.
