She & Him – Silver Bells (Chords)

She and Him – Silver Bells (Chords)

Good to see Zooey Deschanel busting out the ukulele for this cover of Livingston and Evans’s Silver Bells on She and Him’s Christmas album. Also good to see that she’s handled being constantly referred to as ‘adorkable’ without having sprayed crowded streets with machine-gun fire.

Suggested Strumming

Zooey goes with mostly just down-strums all the way through. It’s in 3/4 time so do three down strums each for the C-Cmaj7 bit and six strums for everything else.

If you want to vary it up, you can replace a set of three down-strums with:

d – d u d u

hello. it’s me, the pain in the arse. (see how Brit I was there?)

the last chord in the verses and chorus is C, not Am.

    srsly. try it.

WP sez I double posted. actually, I was just trying to make sure I was notified of followup comments. sorry if it came across twice.

    Ralph: Glad you enjoyed it.

    Vanessa: Have fun with it!

L.bo: That seems to be the consensus view.

Hobbit: Granted, C does make more sense. But I don’t think that’s what she’s playing.

Ok that was pretty sweet. I started tinkering with the uke a year ago & to be honest in the last 4 months I haven’t picked it up much. I forgot more than I remembered in that time but I downloaded your chords anyway & gave it a try. On 1st play through it sounded a bit wonky to my ears so I tried it again with the video playing. Not only was it easy to follow along with but it sounded much better the 2nd time. Thanks for posting this & encouraging me to pick up the strings I love to strum!

ImKukie: Glad I could help get you back into it!

I think she’s just strumming open strings (C6, I think?) instead of Am. I’m just guessing though.

In other news, first comment! Woot! Thanks for this blog, Woodshed! I spend many a weekend on this site :)

Sorry if that posted more than once, there seems to be some sort of glitch haha

  13. Woodshed December 14th, 2011 9:57 pm

Wallflower: It still sounds minor-y to me. So maybe Am7.

  14. Howlin' Hobbit December 15th, 2011 12:11 am

Woodshed: Am7 (aka C6) just doesn’t sound right to me either. maybe Amin fingered 2003 instead of 2000?

Super sweet! Love her and love playing this. But I’m pretty sure you’re missing a chord at the end of the first line of the chorus.

If you listen carefully, she seems to be playing F while singing the second “Silver Bells,” then switching to Dm as a transition to “It’s Christmas time in the …” etc. Check it out.

    Thanks so much for this!

  16. Spearehead December 20th, 2012 3:08 pm

Actually, the little transition from F to Dm seems to appear anywhere there is a DM in the piece. Little details, but still! :)

  17. Woodshed December 21st, 2012 10:19 am

Spearehead: Thanks. I’ll check it out.

It should be She and He or Her and Him, Sad how our language is sliding downhill

  19. Woodshed December 21st, 2012 3:42 pm

    Larry: And our punctuation.

Wow! I’ve had this She & Him album since it first came out . . . no idea that I’d actually be able to play along someday! I was given a ukulele for a Christmas gift and I couldn’t believe how quickly I’ve been able to pick it up. I attribute my success to this site! SO helpful.

In other news, this was also the very first song that I was able to sing while playing. I think the fact that it’s mostly down strums really helped. I feel like a real ukulele player!

Thanks so so very much. LOVE THE UKULELE!

  21. Woodshed December 24th, 2012 12:22 pm

Hayley: Thanks so much! I’m really glad it helped.

Got something to say?
