Gotye – Somebody That I Used to Know/Coldplay – Yellow (Instrumental Tab)

Somebody That I Used to Know (Instrumental Tab)

I’ve already put up the chords for this song. But when Voxdog sent me his arrangement for an instrumental version I had to put it up here and do my own version.

My version is very similar to Voxdog’s. But I’ve shaved out quite a few of the sections and I take fewer trips up the fretboard (it makes it a lot easier to play while staring into space).

I encourage you to do your own take on the arrangement as well. This one is a good place to start for doing that too. The melody is really strong so as long as you have that going on you can fill in the backing in any way you like the sound of.

There are more of Voxdog’s arrangements here: Mele Kalikimaka, Sweet Child O’ Mine and Here Comes the Sun.

Coldplay – Yellow (Instrumental Tab)

I did a similar thing with voxdog’s tab for Yellow. His tab is above. I read through his and busked together my own version based on that.

Kudos for the great beard guy from Walk off the Earth reference, awesome playing!

Somebody That I Used to Know – Loooong tab. But well worth it. Excellently composed and it sounds wonderful. It’ll take me a while to get it REALLY under my belt, but I’m excited. Thanks so much!

Yellow – This song has actually flown under my radar for an embarrassingly long time, which is sad for a Coldplay fan but shush. I love the sound, I love the feel. Thanks so much for posting! ^_^

Hee hee! I hope, for my sake at least, that gazing trance like into the distance is optional? ;)

  4. Jon March 9th, 2012 3:19 am

How in the world are you keeping a straight face on the Gotye cover? Haha ;D

  5. Captain Nirvana March 9th, 2012 11:44 pm

What kind of ukulele do you sport in the Gotye version?

  6. Karthik March 10th, 2012 1:30 pm

    This is fantastic, thank you.

Any chance you can put up your (simplified) tab to Goyte as well? I’m trying to work through it, discarding sections that are too hard for a beginner like me, but trimming tabs is harder than I thought it would be!

the last song this difficult was sigur ros that took me 6 weeks to learn — as a novice player you make it exciting and challanging to play and i never get bored learning with your site. goyte a favourite song of the moment. once again – you rule!!

  8. Sharon March 10th, 2012 11:00 pm

I love that Gotye song (both versions) and am hoping one day to have to skills to play your tab. Practice, practice…. I love the video (and the beard!) Thanks.

  9. Woodshed March 12th, 2012 6:32 am

    LilHelper: Thanks very much!

Olive: I don’t know how you could have avoided Yellow!

pepamahina: It’s only compulsory if you have a beard.

Jon: That was the easy part.

    Captain Nirvana: KoAloha Sceptre.

    Karthik: Probably not, I’m afraid.

catherine: That’s an excellent attitude to have. Hope you get it together.

Sharon: Good luck! I love the beard too!

  10. Hannah March 13th, 2012 6:07 pm

One day, I will be skilled enough to play both of these songs. One day.

  11. Woodshed March 15th, 2012 12:30 pm

    Hannah: Good luck with it!

  12. David April 22nd, 2012 2:37 pm

The Gotye ukulele tab suggests a G tuning, I assume that is the standard GCEA tuning?

  13. Steve April 30th, 2012 10:46 am

Hey mate I love both versions particularly the cold play one. I’m having a little trouble with getting the strumming right for it though. Any help would be greatly appreciated. cheers dude.

  14. Danzo May 22nd, 2012 11:58 pm

Hey, learnin goyte atm, sounds good.

i know u probably get this all the time but im stuck for baritone instrumentals to learn, there are tons of classical pieces online but not much else due to CR and stuff. if ur not too busy and could do a good song tab that would be sweet mate.

    cheers

  15. Woodshed May 25th, 2012 7:06 pm

    David: Yes, it is.

Steve: I was just improvising the strumming for my version. Filling in between the notes where it sounded right.

Danzo: Sorry, I’m not really into baritone.

Hello, amazing cover thanks so much for posting this! I’m getting a little bit lost with the arrangement however and I think lyrics would hugely help, would it be at all possible for you to post an edit with the lyrics underneath the bars?
    thanks!

  17. MaluhiaMitchell May 30th, 2012 10:30 pm

You make it so easy to recognize! Within seconds of just playing the first few bars, people in the room are like “Is that ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’?”
    Thanks!

  18. Woodshed May 31st, 2012 9:34 am

    MaluhiaMitchell: That’s excellent!

  19. Marty August 18th, 2012 10:44 am

Love both versions. Gotye is a nice challenge. How about a version of Massive Attack’s Teardrop?

  20. Nuno Cordeiro August 19th, 2012 3:16 am

    Hey Woodshed!
I really love your version and it seems significantly simpler than Voxdog’s version.

Could you possible put up the tab for this one?
I looked into your other tabs for this song and I really prefer this version.

    Thanks in advance.

  21. Woodshed August 22nd, 2012 9:46 am

Marty: That is a great song. Not sure how it’d translate to uke though.

Nuno: I’d say just do what I did and use voxdog’s tab as a jumping off point for your own version.

  22. Nuno Cordeiro August 22nd, 2012 11:22 am

    Thanks for your reply.

I’ve been trying to improvise like you did but I guess I’m not good enough to find out what I can take out or change.

I guess I’ll come back to it when I’m more experienced.

Let me know if you change your mind.

  23. spiffy September 17th, 2012 3:36 am

you make it look so easy!

  24. Woodshed September 17th, 2012 12:12 pm

spiffy: This one is a bit easier than most of them. I simplified it from the tab.

  25. Alex March 9th, 2013 9:03 pm

It says to have G tuning. What does that mean? I have standard tuning on my uke right now and it’s not sounding good… Help!
    Thanks,
    Alex

  26. Woodshed March 9th, 2013 10:15 pm

Alex: Don’t worry, it’s just standard tuning.

  27. Totous June 15th, 2013 9:44 am

How come it sounds like the tabs are slightly different than the actual video?

  28. Woodshed June 15th, 2013 9:46 am

Totous: Because my version is based on Voxdog’s. It’s not exactly the same.

  29. Ru July 14th, 2013 11:50 am

Tricky tricky! I wanted a new challenge now I’ve upgraded to a new uke, looks like I found it…

  30. Woodshed July 15th, 2013 6:49 am

    Ru: Good luck with it.

  31. Emmelie November 21st, 2013 8:03 pm

Hey Thanks so much for posting this! Your websites great! I was wondering if perhaps Voxdog has a version where they play this song? Also do you know if this tab is modeled right after the original song? If I wanted to sing along with it when should I come in then? Cheers!

  32. Woodshed November 22nd, 2013 8:07 am

Emmelie: Thanks! I don’t think Voxdog has recorded a version. I’m pretty sure it’s modelled right after the original. The singing would start at bar 11.

  33. Tobi December 22nd, 2013 5:33 pm

Sory, but there is a difference between the video and pdf tabs. (i am saying about gotye song)

  34. Woodshed December 22nd, 2013 9:48 pm

Tobi: Yeah, I talk about it in the post.

  35. Danite January 4th, 2014 6:54 am

I am having the hardest time getting Somebody That I Used to Know to sound right so I’m having to use the video for reference of timings and such, do you think you could upload a version of you playing the downloadable tab?

  36. Danite January 4th, 2014 6:56 am

/Upload your version, love the website by the way! :)

  37. Jean January 4th, 2014 8:05 am

by any chance could you tell us more about your version of Gotye or even post it? As a beginner i really struggle playing the version posted and i don’t really know have to just “shave” it either.. any tips of that as well?

  38. Woodshed January 4th, 2014 8:43 am

    Danite and Jean: Maybe.

  39. Jean January 4th, 2014 10:06 am

do you have any tips on like “shaving” uke tabs? how should beginners approach these more difficult tabs? by the way love this website!

  40. Woodshed January 5th, 2014 8:29 am

Jean: I don’t but I’ll keep it in mind for the future.

  41. Craig November 4th, 2016 2:50 pm

    Woodshed,

Your version is so much better than this tab. I wish I could convey the amount of work I do to be even at my bad level of musicality after years of trying but I’ve been trying long enough to know there’s no way I’ll ever be able to “just play with it” and figure it out. Anyway, if you ever posted yours I would appreciate it so much!

  42. Woodshed November 5th, 2016 11:29 am

Craig: Sorry, no plans to write them up.

  43. ekc1972 September 18th, 2017 6:03 pm

What are the chords you are playing in the chorus please? I love the arrangement, but the chords on this site dont seem to fit what are you are playing…..would really appreciate some help with it

    Thank you :-)
