Win a Kala Pineapple – Competition Closed

COMPETITION CLOSED

I’m jumping on the ukulele giveaway bandwagon and starting up a competition. The prizes are:

First prize: A Kala Pineapple soprano courtesy of ukulele for sale.

Ten Runners Up: One of my ukulele ebooks (your choice).

Everyone Who Enters Gets: Tab for my solo arrangement of Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up (yeah, you read right).

What you have to do: Review your ukulele.

You can write it, make a video, take pictures, record an mp3, whatever takes your fancy. I’ll put it up on the Buy a Ukulele section so everyone can benefit from your experience. The winner will be the one I find most interesting and enlightening (it doesn’t matter whether you give the ukulele a good review or a bad review; or if the uke cost $10 or $10,000).

Email me with your entry (or, if you make a video, upload it to a video sharing site and send me the url). If you want me to link to your website/blog/Facebook/MySpace when I put it on the site, include that too.

The Rules

The review has to be new and original.
You don’t mind me putting it on the site.
You can enter once per ukulele.

Competition Closes: Midnight (Hawaii time) 6th July.

    W00T! i tried a pineapple uke in a shop in london and it was great so i’m in. just i’m not to keen on the pineapple finish

    Awesome contest– Kala Kiwi review is in (its the Pineapple’s sister model) The Pineapple would be a welcome addition in my house. I love the tab as the booby prize!

    Once we all get the tabs, we have got to get a massive uke get-together and rickroll the world, Uke style!

    My Mom’s got a gold label Kamaka, I was jealous and found a flying vee, not up to kamaka standards, went on to a mahalo pineapple – without a bridge or strngs. Once that was repaired – sounds like a million (but I pine for the faux pineapple finish that the kala has!)
    I guess you’ve figured out I’m an artistic/visual person!!

    Hello

    Just finished a more polished review, hope you enjoy the results.

    Was worried about my pronunciation of You-ka-lay-lee but decided that if it didn’t matter about Toh-mah-toes then I might be ok.

    In the end I unclenched and stayed true to the way they pronounce it round here….complicated isn’t it?

    lernon: Yes, if you write a review of your uke that’s good enough to go up in the Buy a Ukulele section. It doesn’t have to be fantastic, just more than, “My ukulele is gr8.”

    I guess the contest is closed now, Al. I have a Kiwi, and perhaps objectively it’s not gr8, but it’s fine enough, really.

    I’ve no urge to replace it, unless I get consideraby better, and even then I’ll be sounding better on the little green thing and that’ll just make it a better sounding uke to me. Anyway, there is a point to this and here it is –

    You’d think that the Kiwi and the Pineapple (Watermelon, too) would be the same ukes with just different designs and headstocks. And
    basically they are, but there is one difference.

    The bridges are different. The Kiwi has a Martin or Flea/Fluke knot type bridge while the others each have a classical guitar tie type bridge. I’ve looked at the Kala site and as far as I can tell the Kiwi is the only one of their ukes with this type of bridge.

    Who knows why. An experiment Mike Upton didn’t think worked, perhaps. But I prefer this type of bridge for ease of string changing (not that I change strings very often). Yes, you can string the other type bridge without actually tying them guitar style, and Ukeeku had a recent entry on a sort of bead the required no knot tying at all that can make the guitar style bridge quicker and easier for string changes. But that just confused me.

    So, how about bringing contests back to the site?

    I have been playing an Oscar Schmidt OU-5 for the last three years. I got it for under a 125 dollars and it was a steal. I am not one to shred a uke, but this one stands up nicely. It has decent sound up and down the fret board. Nice longevity in the sound. Decently loud, but not terrifically so. The action is average. Nice decal work around the sound hole and body.. It looks like it should cost more. I am amazed with how long it can stay in tune. The sound is pleasing; kinda mellow but bright enough. It is an excellent first uke and can last me for a long time, but of course I have had my eye and my piggy bank on saving for something with a Hawaiian name.
