Eddie Vedder – Tuolumne (Tab)

Eddie Vedder – Tuolumne (Tab)

Nype suggested I do a uke version of Eddie Vedder’s Tuolumne from the soundtrack of Into the Wild (and the precursor to Just Breathe). I was a bit trepedacious as a lot of guitar picking songs end up finger-crunchingly tricky on ukulele. But it actually works out very well. I didn’t even have to change the key.

Trickiest Bit

Moving down from the 10th fret at the end of bar 2 to the 3rd fret. If you have trouble with that you can take off that 10th fret and just play bar 2 like bar 3.

Picking Pattern

The right hand is doing a constant Travis-picking pattern. The thumb alternates between the g and C-strings, the index finger picks the E-string and the middle finger picks the A-string.

Here’s the pattern:

TuolumnePicking

And here’s what it looks like slowed down:

The only variation is that I occasionally miss out the final i to buy some time for the chord change. And the slow-down bit at the end of bar 7.

Please do more eddie vedder!!!! Every song from that album is amazing and sounds great on the uke! Great videos in general!

Still learning – would songs like this work with assigning each finger to a string? i’d like to practise that kind of fingerpicking to perfection, before moving to other kinds. Thinking it could make the two to get mixed up in my brain, if i dont.

Thanx Sir Al, you are the best!

  4. Kempo June 28th, 2013 4:00 pm

Aye… I’ll be havin that, Cheers Al!

  5. Kempo June 28th, 2013 4:08 pm

Nice, only problem now is… how do I PRONOUNCE it?

  6. Caroline June 28th, 2013 5:51 pm

    Kempo: too-AH-lum-ee

Al: Thanks so much for posting such a great tab.

  7. Woodshed June 28th, 2013 10:51 pm

Josh: I’ve done quite a lot already!

Kennet: I wouldn’t recommend playing it that way.

    IVEY: You’re too kind!

    Kempo: You’re welcome.

Caroline: Thanks for clearing that up. The internets can’t seem to agree on a pronunciation.

    Ah, this is fantastic.

BTW, I don’t know if it’s from practicing Ukulele Mike’s Beatles tutorials on Youtube, where he does a lot of Travis picking, but I can do all chord changes without having to omit any i’s.

(I’ve never picked up a song that sounded this good in less than ten minutes before. It feels amazing! Thank you for the tabs.)

    Karthik: Congratulations!

Nype: You’re welcome. Thanks for the suggestion.

That whole soundtrack made me early 20s.. back then I had this insane urge to abandon society and just live in the woods. Very special memories were created to that music.

  13. Chandler July 11th, 2013 8:53 pm

Do you pick harder with certain fingers? For me playing this, it just sounds like the ‘G’ string is overpowering.

  14. Woodshed July 11th, 2013 9:26 pm

Chandler: I’m playing the thumb notes (on the g and C) less strong but that should happen fairly naturally anyway.

  15. Max July 27th, 2013 3:40 pm

I’m finding myself picking this with only my thumb and middle finger. Do you think this will create a big issue with speed as I’m trying to increase the tempo?

  16. Woodshed July 29th, 2013 7:28 am

Max: It’s probably possible to do. I think it would be a lot more difficult that way though.

This tab is beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing. You’re a truly talented musician :)

  18. Woodshed February 20th, 2015 12:10 pm

    Michele: Thanks so much!

  19. Steve July 15th, 2015 3:09 am

I just came across this. It sounds so nice – just like the original song – and with a bit of practice I think I’ll have it down. Thank you!

  20. Woodshed July 15th, 2015 8:55 am

    Steve: Thanks! Happy practicing!

  21. Irish Tom August 25th, 2015 10:26 pm

    Hi!
    love your site. Really awesome.
Any chance you could explain to me what the 1-3 (above bar 2) and the 4 (above bar 3) mean?
I would be really grateful. More than I am already.
    Thanks,

    Thomas, Ireland

  22. Woodshed August 26th, 2015 9:24 pm

Irish Tom: Those tell you to play the bar under the 1-3 for the first three repeats. Then for the fourth repeat skip ahead to the bar with 4 above it.

My brother in law is making me a uke out of a gourd (I’m so excited – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fK4nJS1kSI) and I’ve decided to learn this song as a welcome home present for it. It’s harder than any of the few picking songs I know, but I think I can do it, with your detailed instructions (i.e. the picking pattern video, etc.).

  24. Woodshed September 27th, 2015 9:28 pm

Cathy: I love the sound of that instrument!

  25. Lisette November 18th, 2015 6:12 pm

Hi, I would love to use your version for a promoclip for our NGO, would that be fine with you?

  26. Woodshed November 18th, 2015 7:01 pm

Lisette: I’d be delighted. Obviously I don’t own the rights to the song itself so I can’t say about that. But I’m happy for you to use it from my end.

  27. Marty March 11th, 2016 10:10 am

Thanks so much for this, Woodshed. I learnt this here and ended up playing it at a wedding last year (as a duet with a friend on guitar) and it was amazing. Once you pick up the fingerpicking it’s impossible not to want to play everything that way.

    You’re the best!

  28. Woodshed March 11th, 2016 10:51 am

    Marty: Fantastic! Thanks so much!
