Selmer, Loprinzi, SpruceHouse: Ukulele Window Shopping
October 16, 2009
I love the look of the old Django-endorsed Maccaferri guitars. It’s a shame Maccaferri didn’t use the shape for their ukuleles (other than the baritone). So it’s good to see the influence of the Maccaferri ukulele on Selmer.
For the sake of entertainment, I usually focus on more outlandish ukuleles but I do love beautifully simple ukuleles like this SpruceHouse and this Loprinzi.
If you had your interest piqued by the Mya-Moe interview earlier this week, there’s a fine looking tenor resonator up for sale.
Friend of the blog, Byjimini is selling off his Lanikai LU-21CE.
According to the Southern Ukulele Store, Eleukes are now being made in the Kala factory. Not much of a surprise when you look at the tabacco sunburst and f-holes on this one and compare it to the Kala archtop.
Musician’s Friend are having a sale on accessories. If you’re thinking of buying a case, looks like it might be a good time. They’re advertising this baritone case at 81% off.

Ukulele Window Shopping
January 23, 2009
Note this down as the week ukulele makers started going completely insane. WaverlyStreet have made an aluminum ukulele (there’s a video of it here). Here’s a ukulele with a whammy bar which sounds nasty (thanks to vialde for finding that). Kealani have gone safariing and have come back with leopard skin and zebra wood ukuleles.
But the real ‘I don’t care how ridiculous it is, I want it’ ukulele is the doube neck ukulele from D&D.
It looks like BugsGear have been raiding the Kala design cupboard for their new pineapple and f-hole Eleukes. The big selling point seems to be that you can plug your ipod into them and play along with it. Just the sort of gimmick that would hook me in. Even if those f-holes are very unsexy and blob-like.

On eBay UK right now there’s a seller with a number of Bugsgear EleUkes up for sale. The strange thing is, the ‘Buy It Now’ price for each size is exactly the same. So you can pick up a Tenor TC100-PHP for £199.99 (it’s £139.50 at the Ukulele Shop) and a Tenor TC100-MHP for £159.99 (£175 at the Ukulele Shop).
You wait ages for a KoAloha Sceptre of come along and two arrive at once: Tenor, Concert.
It’s a shame there aren’t some decent photos of this 8 string Kamaka Lili’u. From what you can see, it looks intriguing.
Speaking of photos, hello, sailor. Or, if you’re one of those insane girls who judges guys by their shoes, you’ll find this pair much more handsome. If you’re in to sailors, ukes and shoes, this might be the clip for you.
Christmas Gifts for Ukulele Players: Electric Ukuleles
December 15, 2007
If you can’t stand the sound of your loved one strumming incessantly, it might seem a little counter-intuitive to buy them an electric ukulele. Were it not for one word: headphones.
With their round backs and distinctive sound-holes, Ovation Applause tenor ukuleles are heavily based on their guitar big brother. In my opinion, they have a slightly dated look – there’s a definite whiff of Bon Jovi unplugged about them. But recently, Kaki King came along and rescued the Applause image.
Buy for: the hair-rocker in your life.
Bugsgear’s Eleuke has a much more modern look. They come in a sparkling blue or a more understated natural wood.
They now have one you can plug headphones straight into, so no excuse for waking up family members with midnight strummings.
The Kala Archtop Tenor has a more classic look with jazzy f-holes and an archtop.
Buy for: midnight jazzers, those who find the term ‘f-hole’ endlessly amusing.
What’s your electric uke recommendation?
