Amanda Palmer, Broken Records: UkeTube
September 27, 2008
Arrrrrgh. Some serious interweb connection problems for me at the moment. I’ve got a few posts lined up, but if you’re expecting a message from me, you may have to wait a while.
Anyhoo, this week’s videos include Amanda Palmer covering another Radiohead song on the uke. I would have included the Jack and Meg of the ukulele Versi-o-rama doing thieir version of Tonight You Belong to Me were it not for Dailymotion issues - the singing and ukeing might not be the best around, but the video more than makes up for it. Ukulele Video of the Year 2007: Sweetafton23 - Tom Cruise Crazy
January 19, 2008
Thanks everyone who voted. After a nice, round 200 votes, the winner was Sweetafton23’s cover of Jonathan Coulton’s Tom Cruise Crazy. A very deserving winner (although if Willa had picked up that uke in her version of Re: Your Brains it might have been another story) and very topical. If you enjoyed TCC, watch MyHope - her own song with some definite Coulton influence.
You can go here to Digg Tom Cruise Crazy.
The chords for this version are a little different from the original. The most obvious difference being the ukulele version is in the key of A rather than E. There’s also this nifty little bit that crops up in the intro and at the end of the chorus.

Officially, the Saturday UkeTube is on hiatus at the moment. However, these five videos are just too good. I had to share them.

Britney Spears/sweetafton23 - Toxic (Tab)
I’m quite ashamed to be mentioning Britney Spears for the second time on this blog, but the quality of this ukulele version of Toxic didn’t really leave me with much choice. She does a great job of cramming all the essential parts onto the uke.
The most challenging part of the song is the riff that kicks the song off. It starts off with a string of hammer-ons and pull-offs. The Fluke she uses is louder and has more sustain than many ukes. If you’re using a soprano you’ll have to work a little harder to get all the notes to sound clearly. The second bar of the riff she plays all on one string. If, like me, you’re so lazy you don’t like moving your hand unless it’s completely necessary, you could the second bar like this:
