Zach Condon of Beirut’s Ukuleles

The second in the ‘What ukulele do they play?’ series. The good news: if you want to play the same ukuleles as Zach Condon, you won’t have to spend anywhere near as much as if you wanted Jake Shimabukuro’s ukulele. They’re actually fairly bog-standard ukuleles, not that expensive and would be a good choice for beginners.

He seems to have two main stage ukuleles:

Bushman Jenny

Irrefutable evidence. Looks to me like a BU7TV.

Lanikai

Irrefutable evidence. Looks to me like an LU-21T.

Other ukuleles he’s been spotted with:

Fluke: On the set of the video for Elephant Gun he Postcards from Italy on the Fluke that’s featured in the video.

Samick: In this photoshoot. It’s the only time I’ve seen him with a Samick, so I don’t think it’s a regular player of his. It looks like a UK70.

    I noticed the photograph of him with the Samick when I had the album out from the library.

    We have a Greg Bennett guitar, so when I saw that photograph, I decided that I must have the matching ukulele. I’ll let you know when I get my way!

    By the way Beirut come to Brazil this year, and last friday 18.09.2009 Zach was using a ukelele from PONO….

    hey i was just wondering if the lu 21t that he’s using is just a plain tenor or if it’s the rosewood fret one? i’m about to order my first one and i’d really like it to be the spot on one he uses. i’m sure he uses both of them but it’d be really helpful to know that first. thanks!

    The bushman jenny that he uses isn’t a Tenor. It’s concert :)

    are the two with “irrefutable evidence” tenor ukuleles?

    what i mean to ask is if zach condon uses tenor or soprano ukulele’s in most of his songs (primarily the penalty and postcards from italy)

    Lauren: The Lanikai is a tenor. I think the Bushman is a concert.

    The Bushman Jenny he uses must be a Cut-Away Concert.
    Click on the photo. See the 10th spots on the fingerboard of his uku? It’s the same with a Concert, but not a Tenor.

    If it’s a Tenor, there would be the 9th spots, but not the 10th.

    I saw Beirut this summer and Zach was playing on a TENOR 6-STRING (HF-36) from KAMAKA !

    Davy: It’s a plastic fretboard (which I wouldn’t really recommend).
