Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra – I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man (Chords)
Another one from the wonderful WIUO. This Prince cover is the standout track on their latest EP The Dreaming. Another good one for ukulele groups – easy chords for the beginners and twiddly bits for the showoffs. The only unusual chord in it is Ab. If you can’t get your fingers around that you can just move the whole G chord shape up a fret and reach your thumb round to stop the G string sounding.
Suggested Strumming
d – d – d u d u
Will see you almost all the way through.
In the verse: once for C, once for G and twice for F.
In the chorus: once for F, once for G and twice for F. Once for the other chords (except the final G – two down strums for that).
Twiddly Bits
There’s a lot going on in the intro. I’ve written it up for four parts:
And here’s me playing that arrangement slowed down a bit.

Great! I had never seen this video. I’ve done this song on guitar for years. It’s nice to see that they’ve really arranged it. Love all the vocal parts.
Cool. they’re almost funky in parts.
Excellent choice of song for the uke! I often struggle with choosing uke-appropriate songs (”Mother” by Danzig most recently). And, as always, magnificent tab!
Brilliant! I know what I’ll be playing at the folk club on Wednesday.
This is a great arrangement for ukulele and seems so much fun to play!
@Jeff: “Mother” by Danzig is a great song. I tried to cover it on ukulele as well and it didn’t work for me either.
SEBI: I am absolutely certain you could rock at “Mother.” I’ve watched everything you’ve uploaded. I can rock everything except {raises hat to woodshed} the “twiddly bits.” I hope I get the chance to see SOMEBODY do that number! CHALLENGE TIME FOR ANYBODY THAT READS THIS!
Thank you so much for this. A great start to the weekend.
That is very very good!!
great interpretation and arrangements!
Craig: It’s a great song and they did a great job with it.
Jeff and Sebi: One of you has to get it together, I want to hear it.
byjimini: Good luck with it.
Mike: You’re welcome.
Alan and Ray: Agreed!
this is just beautiful, i have to say its hard to pull off prince covers but this is just absolutely perfect
