I apologise for abusing your bandwidth as I try to pour your entire site into my brain at once. You’re the best thing since wikipedia!

Could someone help me? I’m trying to work on finger picking. I’m using a Soprano ukulele (12 frets). Whenever I try to play chords, etc. past the 7 fret or so it sounds horrible! I believe it’s in tune and I also think I’m playing it right.

Something must be wrong, since it just sounds so bad though. I was trying to play the Mario Theme and Scarborough Fair.

Any ideas what I could be doing wrong or what’s up?

Kristen: It could be the ukulele. Cheaper ukuleles can have bad intonation (meaning they sound bad when you play them higher on the neck). Changing the strings can sometimes help, as can lowering the action (by taking out the saddle and sanding it down a little). If that doesn’t work, it may be time for a new uke.

Thanks for the reply, Woodshed! I figured that was the problem, but I wanted to make sure that I just wasn’t doing something stupid. Now I have a viable excuse to go Ukulele shopping :-p

*grin*… an excuse to go Uke shopping?? Careful Kristen! Once you start you’ll need an excuse NOT to go Uke shopping!

Who needs an excuse to go ukulele shopping? Not this gal!

It could also be a bowed or warped neck. That happened with my first guitar that my parents bought for me. They didn’t know what they were looking for and I couldn’t play past the 10th fret. Excellent excuse for a new uke! :)

This may be a lot to ask but i was wondering if you could do a fingerpicking lesson or tut of I’m yours by Jason mraz because ive seen a video of the song being played by sungha Jung on youtube and he used finger picking

  11. Woodshed August 3rd, 2011 10:13 am

    Steven: No, no chance!

It’s normal for me to be putting in hours of practice on this, right? I’ve been stuck on this section for nearly a month now.

  13. Woodshed January 23rd, 2012 9:43 am

    Jon: Yes, that’s completely normal.

Where could I PAY someone for low g uke instrumentals. I need a couple of hymn arrangements for a tenor uke with the low g string.

Hey, Woodshed! How do you feel about about doing a fingerpicking lesson on Joanna Newsom’s Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie? It’s such a lovely song, and I think the harp would translate beautifully to ukulele.

  16. Woodshed May 16th, 2012 10:44 am

Cheyenne: Intimidated! I’m not really sure how I’d translate it to uke.

  17. Cheyenne May 21st, 2012 4:40 pm

That’s completely understandable. Well, if you ever decide to attempt it, let me know!

Hey Woodshed, love the site! Used it for months one end when I first started playing, and just decided to start learning clawhammer. I vaguely recall once seeing something on the site about it. Am I mistaken?

  19. Woodshed August 12th, 2012 8:58 pm

Billy: I don’t think it’s something I did. But I did link to Aaron Keim’s clawhammer tutorials.
