April Smith and Bess Rogers, Soul Covers: UkeTube Part 2

August 22, 2009

Part two of the UkeToob includes me giving the Uke Hunt kiss of death to four Shake Your Soul entries, Bess Rogers (who managed to drag herself away from the Boobie Bungalow for one night to join April Smith) and a couple of tributes to The Ramones. There’s also a version of First Day of My Life I picked up thanks to Donnie’s UkeTube replacement service. I have a number of instant rejections for consideration. And one of them is covering a blatantly obvious tune (which includes anything done by The Beatles, Jake or Julia Nunes). Which saves a huge amount of time but does mean I miss the occasional gem like this one. [Read more]

Saturday UkeTube: MMMBops

January 24, 2009

Two versions of MMMBop this week (thanks to the Ukulele Underground thread). But they’ve both found a creative and new way to play it. Also this week is Ian Emmerson of the Re-Entrants‘ epic version of Bat Out of Hell.

Usually I wouldn’t include a video where the uke is painfully out of tune, but I’ve made an exception for Madeline Ava. Partly because I really like the song and partly because of, “It’s OK, Madeline. Your soul’s not out of tune.”

And don’t forget to get in your nominations for Ukulele Video of the Year [Read more]

Florence and the Machine UkeTube

December 6, 2008

I’m a bit slow off the mark with Florence and the Machine. The song isn’t particularly uke heavy (and I’m still not 100% convinced that it even is a uke) but I love the song, so it’s here. Also this week is a duet between Seeso and Ukulelezo bursting with sexual tension, Ken Middleton covering a song from my favourite EP of the year and plenty more.

UkeTube: Seeso, Woolgatherers, Paula Fuga

October 25, 2008

It’s an old joke, but I’ve never seen it done as well as this (thanks to krabbers for the tip-off). Other videos this week include Seeso taking an early lead in the Bushman Contest, Carl Ray Villaverde ripping up Keep Your Eyes on the Hands and plenty more. [Read more]

Max the Ukulele Punk Rocker, Seeso and More Videos

August 9, 2008

Look, Mum, I’m in the New York Times. I do feel a little slighted that they didn’t include a link to me (FMM and MUD got one), but now you can expect to see a big, “As Featured in the New York Times,” sticker every time I mention the National Anthems ebook*.

Anyhoo, you came for ukulele videos, and that’s what you’ll get. Particularly good this week are Max the Ukulele Punk Rocker with an original song, and Seeso and Jason Arimoto (together and apart).

Windy City Ukulele Festival, Play Well With Others

June 13, 2008

I’m back a little early. There’s news to be newsed. Over the break I had to take the fancy rotating banner off the front of the site. It was bringing the whole site crashing down every couple of weeks so it had to go. It was very pretty but a whole heap of trouble (like a few girls I could mention).

Windy City Ukulele Festival details.

I’ve had a few people ask me various questions about playing with others and in uke groups but – being an anti-social loner who avoids human contact at all costs – I’ve never been much help to them. Now I can point them towards Play Well With Others. It’s a book and website giving advice on jamming which boasts endorsements from Janet Klein, Jim Beloff and Lil Rev. It’s also a handsome looking site.

Seeso and Clara Belle featured on Boing Boing (thanks for the mention, Seeso).

MP3s: I’ve mentioned foggy ruins of time many times in this section. The guy behind it has released an EP, under the name Existential Hero, featuring his bariuke. You can download the whole thing here. songs:illinois has Jenny Jenkins.

Uke chords on posters: officially a good idea. Shelley ‘Uke Box’ Rickey features Kokomo on her poster (and some not safe for work material – what is it with ukes and nudity?)

Paul McCartney reprises his ukulele version of Something at the Anfield gig plus a quick burst of When I’m Washing [sic] Windows.

Dr Sparkles’ TV theme game.

Isaac was a little disappointed not to win Ukulele Review’s contest and came up with this (inspired by Cyanide and Happiness). Click to enlarge.

Lots of precipitation this week; two songs about rain and one about snow. And, of course, plenty of other great stuff including Roy Smeck, Ledward Kaapana and Shorty Long.
